This card was issued in 1961 by Hornimans
Tea and a card was put inside each 1/4-pound
packet of tea. On the back it says, "Basenji.
Known for centuries in Central Africa and used
by the natives to hunt game when silence is
useful. The only breed of dog which cannot bark.
First imported to England 30 years
ago, now becoming extremely popular. Special
characteristics are the wrinkled brow, the
pointed hooded ears and the tightly curled
tail. Coat is short and glossy, colours
chestnut and white, black and white. Weight
approximately 22 lbs."
Basenji Card 1(Horniman Tea, 1961)... $4.95 each
This card was issued in 1957 by the Priory
Tea company in their packets of tea. This
was part of a game called I-Spy and on the
back it says, "Basenji. An unusual dog -- he
doesn't bark. I-Spy his alert appearance and
erect ears." And then there is a place to
write down when you have actually spied one.
Basenji Card 2(Priory Tea, 1957)... $4.95 each
This card was issued in 1938 by Gallaher Ltd.
This is from their second series of 48 and
on the back it says, "Basenji. The Basenji
has two remarkable characteristics which make
it hard to believe that it belongs to the
race of dogs at all. One is that it never
barks, and the other that it washes itself
like a cat. The breed is kept by the East
Afrian natives and its introduction to this
country is very recent. The wrinkles on the
head, as seen in our picture, are very
characteristic of this exotic strain."
Basenji Card 3(Gallaher, 1938)... $9.95 each
This interesting card was issued in 1970 by
the Molassine Co for Vims-Pet. It is part of
their serious of "Dogs at Work". On the back
it says, "Basenji. The Basenji can be traced
back over 5,000 years where he lived in Egypt.
Centuries later he was found in the Belgian
congo, where he assisted the tribesmen in
hunting wild game. He has no bark, so the
huntsmen ties a gourd filled with rattling
pebbles round his neck, in order to keep
track of him. The Basenji is here
seen stalking in the long grass of the
African jungle."
Basenji Card 4(Molassine, 1970)... $5.95 each
This card was issued in 1974 by the Epol
Animal Feed Company in South Africa. On the
back, in both Dutch and English, it says,
"Basenji is a native of Central Africa, used
also for hunting in ancient Egypt. It does
not bark but yowls and chortles. Height 43 cm,
weight 11 kg."
Basenji Card 5(EPOL Animal Feed Co., 1974)... $12.95 each
These cards from Modena, Italy are spectacular pictures. The subject is not
identified. There is nothing printed on the back, except to identify the name
of the company producing the picture.(Service Line)
Basenji Card 6(Service Line, Modena Italy, 1993)... $4.95 each
Basenji Playing Cards
Sorry, we don't have any complete sets of playing cards. These were
from collections of antique cards and there is no way of knowing how
old they are or where one might find more of them. They are certainly
a part of Baseji history.
This is not a trading card, but a playing card
from a deck of different breeds. The Basenji
was chosen for the 3 of hearts.
Basenji Playing Card 1... $4.95 each
These nifty cards are apparently from two decks of
playing cards with Basenjis on the back. I wish
that I had the full decks.
Basenji Playing Card 2 and 3... $7.95 for the pair
This is the only cigar band with a Basenji on it that I have been able to find.
It is Dutch and was made for the Willam II cigars. Cigar bands are an
interesting art form and if I ever find another Basenji, I will be sure to list
it here.
Basenji Cigar Band... SOLD OUT
* We can take visa/mc/disc or paypal, but they are first come first served,
so let me know if you are interested.
* Truly one of the cheapest unique treats for yourself or a friend (great for
club trophies as well!)
* It is absolutely true that you will often find some of these cards at very
reasonable prices. On the other hand, if
you add in the gas, hours, and hassles that it has taken to find them, you may
find it easier to just get them from us while we have them :*) I don't always
count on getting more in the near future. I get them when I can find them and
the stock is not always constant.
* I do have other breeds available. Let me know and perhaps I can do a page for
your breed.
