this incredible Souvenir Sheet from Mali. It was issued in 1996 and
the interesting part is the outstanding Azawakh on the left. The Basenji on the
right is also unusual, since brindle was not a recognized color until
recently in that breed. It is actually larger than
shown here since it has a wide white border as well as the mauve. It could be gold leafed
and mounted if you wanted for an additional charge.

My main reason for making this page for the Azawakh's was because of this Souvenir
Sheet. It
is one of the most outstanding portraits offered for any breed. The headstudy
in the actual stamp is the same one that they used in 1998 for their Dogs of
Africa series where the dogs were shown with their country of origin. This
time, the dog stamps that came with the set are shown with a major landmark in
the country of origin. The Azawakh is shown with primitive art cave paintings
from central Africa (the red insert near the headstudy.)
The Akita, for instance, is shown with Mount Fuji in Japan and the Australian
Terrier with the Opera House in Melbourne Harbor. But the Azawakh was honored
with the Souvenir Sheet portrait of the Bedouin Tribesman and his beloved
animals. This gorgeous stamp can be mounted framed with lacquered black and gold
leaf for a very reasonable price!
