Australian Shepherd stamp from Batum
The break-up of the Soviet Union has created a bonanza for collectors of topical stamps. In an effort to generate hard currency, the local states are issuing interesting stamps in the hopes that they will be sold world-wide without having to offer the associated postal services. All but one of our Australian Shepherd stamps comes from these new Russian governments. Batum is a local Russian state just south of the Black Sea, near Turkey. They issued this set of dogs May 14, 1997 in celebration of the Asia '97 "World Stamps and Coins Exhibition" in Bangkok Thailand.

Australian Shepherd stamp from Evenkia
Evenkia is in the far northern region of central Russia. The native people were nomads who depend on hunting and reindeer for their livlihood for centuries. The Soviet government tried to bring these people under their rule but the climatic conditions are very harsh and it was difficult to exploit the natural resources, so much of the country was still undominated when the Soviet Union broke apart in 1991. This is the first set of dog stamps issued by the remote region of Evenkia, put out in 1999.

Australian Shepherd stamp from Dagestan

A beautiful issue from Dagestan.
Dagestan is one of the republics of the former USSR. Located between the Caspian Sea on the East and Caucasus mountains on the West, it is probably one of the most attractive places in that part of the globe. Its area is close to that of Scotland. With population of just above 2 million people, Dagestan is the homeland to over 36 different nationalities, and each one of those nationalities has its own unique language. Such combination of languages, cultures, types of landscape and customs makes it a one of a kind place in the world. These days, however, Dagestan is going through the times of heavy unrest, both political and ethnical.

Australian Shepherd stamp from Hakasia Australian Shepherd stamp from Hakasia

Hakasia is another of the new local Russian states formed after the break up of the Soviet Union in 1991. The wonderful red merle Aussie on the left was issued in 1999, while the blue merle on the right was put out in 2000. I believe that the headstudy was taken from the full body image used by Evenkia above and Kalmykia below. It is still quite attractive, however.

Australian Shepherd stamp from Kalmykia

Australian Shepherds are not yet as appreciated by the stamp fancy as they deserve, but the ones that have been issued are outstanding. This one is a very small stamp from Kalmykia.

Australian Shepherd stamp from Kyrgyzstan

Together with Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan forms a region known as Central Asia. The area of Kyrgyzstan is almost completely mountainous and is subject to major earthquakes. It declared its independence with the downfall of the Soviet Empire in 1991. The set of stamps that this one comes from was issued in 1999.

Australian Shepherd stamp from Sakhalin

Sakhalin is a very long but narrow island located between Japan and Russian Maritime Territory. It is separated from the continent by a narrow strait of 6 km width and for that reason, Westerners first thought it should be a peninsula. With the Kuril Islands, Sakhalin is one of the territories disputed between Japan and Russia and its belonging has not yet been definitely settled. In 1997, the local government started issuing stamps.

Australian Shepherd stamp from Somalia

The Republic of Somalia issued a set of stamps in 1999, with two breeds on each stamp. I have not figured out the connections on any of them yet, but the Australian Shepherd is shown here with the Chinook. The stamp is quite attractive no matter what the other breed is, though.

Australian Shepherd stamp from Turkmenistan

This stamp was issued in 1999 by Turkmenistan.
Annexed by Russia between 1865 and 1885, Turkmenistan became a Soviet republic in 1925. It achieved its independence upon the dissolution of the USSR in 1991. President NIYAZOV retains absolute control over the country and opposition is not tolerated. Extensive Hudrocarbon/natural gas reserves could prove a boon to this underdeveloped country if extraction and delivery projects were to be expanded. Turkmenistan is on the east side of the Caspian Sea, just above Iran. It is slightly larger than California in size. Its terrain is flat-to-rolling sandy desert with dunes rising to mountains in the south; low mountains along border with Iran; borders Caspian Sea in west. The religion is Muslim 89%, Eastern Orthodox 9%, unknown 2%. The capital is Ashgabsat.

Australian Shepherd stamp from Udmurtia

This stamp was issued in 2001 by Udmurtia.
Udmurtia is approximately midway between Moscow to the Urals. Its land is a hilly wooden plain with numerous swamps, springs and rivers. Its climate is considered a bit too wet and not healthy. Summer is short, rainy and cool; autumn is very cloudy (often there are almost no sunny days from October till January), foggy and rainy. This not very friendly land was originally inhabited by Udmurts (or Votyaks). These peaceful and quiet Finnish people maintained their culture heritage there at least for five thousand years. Their religion is also ancient. They worship the God (called Inmar, The Highest Being) and His assistants governing various elements. With the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Udmurtia became one of the local republics and as such they now issue stamps including this lovely Australian Shepherd.

It is labeled as Dogs of the World. The other dogs shown are the Jack Russell Terrier from England, the Sicilian Hound, the Japanese Spitz, the Egyptian Saluki and the Siberian Huskey. Mozambique put out a second beautiful sheet as well with such breeds as the Basenji, Bichon Frize and Italian Spinone. This is probably one of the most amazing mini sheets ever produced. There are eighteen breeds represented and they have managed to run a perforation line through every one. My, what an accomplishment. The Australian Shepherd is shown enlarged to the right.

Australian Shepherd Cards
Australian Shepherd card from Australian Shepherd card from

These are some of my most unusual Aussie items that I have come across. The card on the left is of Brady Anderson and his dogs. Daisy is a Shepherd/Husky mix but Maggie is a lovely Australian Shepherd. The one on the right is not my fault! Wally Joyner owns a Golden Retriever named Chloe and he apparently thinks that Shadow is an Australia Shepherd, too. Who am I to argue? For the Aussie lover who wants everything related to their breed, here is a card that nobody else will
probably have :-)

* We can take visa/mc/disc or paypal, but they are first come first served, so let me know if you are interested.

*Truly one of the cheapest unique treats for yourself or a friend (great for club trophies as well!)

* It is absolutely true that you will often find some of these stamps at very reasonable prices -- some can be had for under a dollar. On the other hand, if you add in the gas, hours, and hassles that it has taken to find them, you may find it easier to just get them from us while we have them :*) I don't always count on getting more in the near future. I get them when I can find them and the stock is not always constant.

* I do have other breeds available. Let me know and perhaps I can do a page for your breed.
