Yorkshire Terrier Stamps
Yorkshire Terriers are very fortunate to have a variety of lovely stamps to build a collection around.

Ajman is the smallest of the United Arab Emirates. It is immediately to the north of and mostly surrounded by Sharjah. Like most of the country, Ajman is in the process of changes which amount to a transformation. The central area is rapidly being modernized and it is clear that Ajman has no intention of being left behind the other Emirates. It is here that the Victory speedboats are built and Ajman is determined to enjoy a share of the United Arab Emirates' victories for itself.
These two stamps are both recent issues.

Antigua and Barbuda are a pair of islands that were forced to become a "nation" when Great Britain gave them their independence. In 1994, they issued two sets of stamps in commemoration of the Year of the Dog. This one is from the set of smaller dogs.

After seven decades as a constituent republic of the USSR, Belarus attained its independence in 1991. It has retained closer political ties to Russia than any of the other former Soviet republics. Belarus and Russia signed a treaty on a two-state union on 8 December 1999 envisioning greater political and economic integration. Although Belarus agreed to a framework to carry out the accord, serious implementation has yet to take place. Belarus is located in Eastern Europe, east of Poland. Belarus is slightly smaller than Kansas. The climate is cold winters, cool and moist summers; transitional between continental and maritime. The terrain is generally flat and contains much marshland. The population of Belarus is 10,310,520. The capital is Minsk.

This stamp from Bulgaria was issued in 1991, along with three other breeds. They were all head studies and this Yorkie, with its pink bow was probably the nicest.

Central Africa Republic (CAR), landlocked republic in central Africa, bordered on the north by Chad, on the east by Sudan, on the south by the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and on the west by Cameroon. A former french colony, which became independent on August 31, 1960, the CAR was known as the Central African Empire from 1976 to 1979 under the autocratic rule of self-styled,emperor Jean Bedel Bokassa. The CAR has an area of 622,984 sq mi. Bangui is the Capital. French is the official language and tribal languages.

The Congo is situated in west central Africa astride the equator. Its area is nearly three times that of Pennsylvania. Most of the inland is tropical rain. It is a dictatorship. After the Portuguese located the Congo River in 1482, commerce was carried on with the tribes, especially the slave trade. During Worl War II the colony joined Chad in supporting the Free French cause against the Vichy government. The Congo proclaimed its independence without leaving the French Community in 1960, calling itself the Republic of Congo.

This Gambia baby can't be beat. What a wonderful portrait of a deserving breed. The Gambia is a long and narrow country in West Africa that parallels and takes in both sides of the Gambia River. It is surrounded by Senegal on all sides, except on the Atlantic coast, and for this reason the two countries have a lot of ethnic and cultural ties. In contrast to Senegal, a former French colony, The Gambia was colonized by Britain and gained its Independence on February 18, 1965.

Guinea-Bissau is in Africa and they issued this set of dog stamps in 1988. At one time, this one and the Bulgaria above were about the only Yorkshire Terrier stamps available. It is a lot more unusual to find now.

The recent break-up of the former Soviet Union has created a gold mine for collectors of topical stamps. In an effort to generate hard currency, the independent states and local governments have started issuing stamps that they hope to sell to collectors who will buy them and not expect to mail letters with them, so that the government gets the money without having to provide the associated services. This tiny stamp of a Yorkie puppy on the left from Kara Kalpakia is just such an issue, as is the portrait of two holiday Yorkies on the right. We all win with such wonderful additions to our collections.

Although this looks old, it is not. It was just issued last year by the Island Republic of Monserrat in the West Indies. You have probably seen it in the news because of recent volcano activity. I personally like this stamp very much and believe that it should be a major part of any Yorkie collection.

A characture of the Yorkshire Terrier with 'Hairy Maclary's Bone' was issued by New Zealand in 1990 in commemoration of 'Children's Health'.

Para Timor produced this lovely body pose and headstudy in 2000.
East Timor is an area of Indonesia that recently voted to become independent. There is much unrest still since the current government does not want to give up power.

Romania put out this stamp in 1990 in commemoration of the World Winner's Dog Show. The artist is Vamasescu Mihai and it is neat that it shows both the head study and the full body shot.

Sharjah and Dependencies is part of the Arabic block. This stamp was put out in 1972 as the first major offering for the Yorkshire Terrier. It is still a very attractive stamp and will be a classic for a long time.

This is not really a stamp, but an apparently privately issued sticker. I have no history on it other than the fact that I have had it a long time. It is darling and there is only one.

The Yorkie stamp includes a tabby and white mother cat and her orange tabby kitten.
Sao Tome E Principe was discovered and claimed by Portugal in the late 15th century, the islands' sugar-based economy gave way to coffee and cocoa in the 19th century - all grown with plantation slave labor, a form of which lingered into the 20th century. Although independence was achieved in 1975, democratic reforms were not instituted until the late 1980s. Though the first free elections were held in 1991, the political environment has been one of continued instability with frequent changes in leadership and coup attempts in 1995 and 2003. The recent discovery of oil in the Gulf of Guinea is likely to have a significant impact on the country's economy. Located in Western Africa, islands in the Gulf of Guinea, straddling the Equator, west of Gabon. It is more than 5 times the size of Wahington, D.C. The climate is tropical; hot humid; one rainy season (October to May).

St. Vincent is also in the Caribbean and in 1994, they issued dog stamps in commemoration of the Year of the Dog. Both of these are quite lovely and although they are fairly common, they are also from expensive sets.

This nifty stamp was issued in 1999 by the Republic of Togoland in Africa. The set had six stamps including a wonderful Italian Greyhound and a St. Bernard. Interesting bedfellows.

These two stamps were both recently issued, apparently using the same photo for their models. The left one is from Turkmenistan and the one on the right is from Dagestan. I am not sure which one must be slightly distorted. Even though they are the same image, I am including both since a full collection would not be complete without both of them.

Udmurtia is another of the former Soviet States and they put out this darling Yorkie stamp in 1999.

Last, but not least is this remarkable stamp put out by Umm al Qiwain, an United Arab Emirate in 1972. The scan is not fuzzy, this is actually a 3-D stamp. There were about six different breeds issued with this set and this is probably the nicest of the bunch. Truly important for any Yorkie collection.

Yorkshire Terrier Souvenir Sheets


I must admit that I had no idea where Hiiumaa was, so I looked it up on that wonderful search engine, DogPile (www.DogPile.com) and found that it is near Finland in Estonia, which also used to be part of the former Soviet Union. This wonderful block of stamps was issued just last year. Notice that in addition to the images of a darling Yorkie, the background image is a Bull Terrier.

An attractive all puppy souvenir sheet from Gambia. It came out in 2000. See the detail to the right of the Yorkshire Terrier puppies.
The Gambia is a long and narrow country in West Africa that parallels and takes in both sides of the Gambia River. The Gambia was colonized by Britain and gained its Independence on February 18, 1965.

This lovely souvenir sheet issued by Korea is a very obscure piece. It is not listed in any of the regualar locations for Yorkie stamps, so it is difficult to find. The US has an embargo against North Korea so any Korean stamps that we are able to find typically come in with collections from Canada or other countries. For this reason, it is worth getting this sheet whenever it is available. A detail of the two Yorkies is to the right.

An awesome souvenir sheet from Kyrgyzstan, all Yorkshire Terriers.
Together with Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan forms a region known as Central Asia. The area of Kyrgyzstan is almost completely mountainous and is subject to major earthquakes. It declared its independence with the downfall of the Soviet Empire in 1991.

The recent collapse of the economy of the former Soviet Union has forced the local governments to design creative solutions to the lack of cash income. One solution has been the issuing of stamps specifically for marketing on the world market. This set of three stamps from the Kyril Islands was apparently issued for the 1999 French stamp exhibition.

There are a number of islands off the edge of Scotland that issue postage stamps. They are of use only for intraisland mail or to mail letters to the mainland. They are not of use for mailing from Scotland itself. They are considered private issues. This is a lovely souvenir sheet that was put out in 1982 by the Island of Staffa on the coast of Scotland.

Togolaise is located in Western Africa, bordering the Bight of Benin, between Benin and Ghana. It is slightly smaller than West Virginia.

This is a unique sheet for the Yorkshire Terriers in the fact that consists of all Yorkies; a new sheet issued by Turkmenistan in 2000.
Turkmenistan is on the east side of the Caspian Sea, just above Iran.

Yorkshire Terrier Envelopes


A first day of issue envelope commemmorating the International Dog Exposition, November 11, 1993. You get the envelope and the stamp for the price of the envelope alone. I have only one.
Romania is located in Southeastern Europe, bordering the Black Sea. between Bulgaria and Ukraine. It is slightly smaller than Oregon. The climate is temperate; cold, cloudy winters with frequent snow and fog, sunny summers with frequent showers and thunderstorms. They have the following resources petroleum (reserves declining), timber, natural gas, coal, iron, ore, salt, arable land, hydropower. They also have natural hazards of earthquakes, most severe in south and southwest; Geologic structure and climate promote landslides. Environment current issues include soil erosion and degradation; water pollution; air pollution in south from industrial effluents; the capital is Bucharest.

Russia or Russian Federation, independent republic in eastern Europe and northern Asia, the worlds largest country by area. Russia was once the largest and the most prominent republic of the Union of Soviet socialist Republics(USSR, or Soviet Union). In 1991 the USSR broke apart and Russia became an independent country. In general, Russia's climate is similar to that of Canada. Like Canada, although colder and with greater temperature extremes in many places, most of Russia has a harsh continental climate. although climate, and to some dgree soils, limit the country's agricultural wealth. mineral wealth is considerable. Russia's mineral resources are unmatched by any other country. The capital and largest city is Moscow. Russia constitutes more than one-ninth of the world's land area and nearly twice the area of United States or china. Russia is the sixth most populous country, after China, India, the United States, Indonesia, and Brazil. The wealthy, known as the New Rich or New Russians, since 1991, often live quite extravagantly. However, approximately a quarter of the population live in poverty and another 25 to 30 percent earn only slightly more than poverty wages. Many of the elderly, mostly women on fixed incomes, are poor.

* It is absolutely true that you will often find some of these stamps at very reasonable prices -- some can be had for under a dollar. On the other hand, if you add in the gas, hours, and hassles that it has taken to find them, you may find it easier to just get them from us while we have them :*) I don't always count on getting more in the near future. I get them when I can find them and the stock is not always constant.
