SHETLAND SHEEPDOG
Hornimans Tea issued these cards in their packages of tea in 1961.
The following is printed on the back of the card:
"The Shetland Isles have always Produced
miniature animals particularly cattle, sheep and ponies.
The 'Shelties', a typical product, is a Collie
in miniature, known in fact as the Shetland Collie
until 1909. Despite small size can still work sheep
very successfully. Character is provided by the head,
which is fairly long, tapering towards nose,
surmounted by ears thrown back in repose but carried
semi-erect with drooping tips when alert."
Shetland Sheepdog Card 2(Hornimans Tea, 1961)... $4.95 each
"DANIEL" (Shetland Sheepdog)
These lovely drawings were produced by Wills
cigarettes in 1940. The artist is Lucy Dawson and she also
writes the narrative on the back: "Daniel" was rather
serious; he had come out into this big world alone, and
he wondered what life held for him. At first, he was very
sweet if rather pathetic, but I am sure his gay little
nature will revive, and he will forget all about that
Sheepdog mother and the family basket he has left."
Shetland Sheepdog Card 3(Wills Puppies by Dawson reissue, 1990)... $5.95 each
SHETLAND SHEEP DOG. RUNLEE PETER PAN. Sire; Runlee Piper. Dam: Runlee Placid.
These beautiful 'real photos' of Champions were issued by
Sinclair in 1938. the follwoing is shown on the reverse:
"A shaded sable and white, carries a wonderful coat
of right texture which he transfers to his progeny.
A winner of numerous prizes, including a Second Prize
in the Puppy Class at Tauntoo Championship Show at
eight months, and one Second, and three Thirds, at Cruft's
1935. Three times Best of Breed. The Shetland Sheep Dog
should resemble a Collie (rough) in miniature,
from 12 to 15 inches, the ideal height being 13 1/2
inches. Owned and Bred by: Mrs.
Audley Miller. Rodbourne, Malmesbury."
Shetland Sheepdog Card 4(Sinclair Champion Dogs, 1938)... $6.95 each
SHETLAND SHEEPDOG
Players issued these cards in 1979. The series was
titled 'Top Dogs-Grandee'. Beautiful paintings and the artist
is unknown. The back of the card has the following:
"The existence of a hardy and old-established breed
of sheepdog hardly more than a foot high may
sound surprising. It serves to remind us, however,
that our sheep have grown during the last two hundred
years to be very much larger than they previously
were, and no doubt dogs were in proportion.
In the Shetlands, the sheep are still very small,
and they are managed by these excellent
miniature Collies, which is what they really are."
Shetland Sheepdog Card 5(Players Top Dogs Grandee, 1979)... $9.95 each
THE SHETLAND SHEEPDOG
Gallaher put out this set of cards titled
'Dogs 2nd Series' in 1938. The Shetland Sheepdog is card #24.
Shown on the reverse side: "Could best be described
as a small edition of the Rough Collie and in fact,
the standard of points differ very little. The Shetland
Sheepdog is actually a miniature working sheepdog from
the Shetland Isles where of course, there
are also miniature ponies, sheep and cattle.
It was an important worker on the small farms
until the early 1900s when it was "discovered"
and exhibited at the Scottish Shows and later
at Cruft's. A very attractive wee dog, its
abundant coat should be hard and straight and
is easily groomed. Free movers, they are quite
hardy little dogs, seldom fighters, sometimes
reserved with strangers but very responsive
towards their owners. Quite a few have
competed very successfully in Obedience Classes
and Working Trails and they seem to have
managed to retain the trainability and intelligence
of their working ancestors. Height 14-14 1/2 inches.
Anything over an inch higher is a fault".

* We can take visa/mc/disc or paypal, but they are first come first served,
so let me know if you are interested. We try to keep all stamps in stock, so we
probably have the ones that you are looking for.
Truly one of the cheapest unique treats for yourself or a friend (great for
club trophies as well!)
* It is absolutely true that you will often find some of these cards at very
reasonable prices. On the other hand, if
you add in the gas, hours, and hassles that it has taken to find them, you may
find it easier to just get them from us while we have them :*) I don't always
count on getting more in the near future. I get them when I can find them and
the stock is not always constant.
* I do have other breeds available. Let me know and perhaps I can do a page for
your breed.
