Cooke and there is a description printed on the back of the card. "Essentially a sporting breed, originally bred by Captain Edwardes of Sealyham House, Haverfordwest, for digging out badgers, otters and foxes. The qualities required were gameness, endurance and substance in a dog quick enough to dig and battle underground. The Sealyham is no Fox Terrier on short legs, the jaw being more powerful and the body longer. Colour generally all white with occasionally lemon or brown markings on head and ears."

A nice photograph issued by Carreras in 1936 titled "Dogs & Friend". The following description by LADY KITTY RITSON is printed on the back of the card: "Nowadays, a Sealyham is to be found in dozens of homes, but its origin is fairly modern. It was 1910 before they made their appearance at any big show. They were originally used for badger-digging, but now they have become chiefly show-dogs and many strains have lost their gameness while preserving a rather quarrelsome disposition. To look at all attractive they need constant visits to the dog-barber. They are essentially a country dog."

Sealyham Terrier is No. 47 in a series of 50 from paintings by Arthur Wardle. This series was issued by John Player & Sons originally in 1940 titled "Dogs Heads (Eire)" Due to the paper shortage at that time very few were put out. Lucky for the collectors of these cards they were re-issued in 1994 under the title of "Dogs Heads (Eire)-Reprint of 1940". I have a couple of the reprints. A description is on the back of the card. "About the middle of last century Capt. John Edwardes, of Sealyham, Pembrokeshire, began to experiment with various breeds to produce a game, hardy, small terrier to work on fox, badger and otter. His efforts produced the Sealyham Terrier, which was used from then on, as a working terrier. In 1910 the breed appeared in the ring at the Kennel Club Show, and rapidly found favour outside its native country. Breeders reduced its stature, lengthened its head, made it more compact and generally improved its appearance."

Pattreiouex "Dogs" a series of 48 cards was issued in 1939. The cards were enclosed in Senior Service Cigarettes. The following is printed on the back of the card: "The Sealyham is an intelligent companion, but the white coat and short legs may be a nuisance in towns. It has a tendency to eczema, so avoid starchy foods.
GENERAL HINTS
SELECTING A PUP. In some breeds such as spaniels and sporting dogs the pups most likely to turn out best are not very prepossessing when young. Prick-eared breeds, such as Alsatians have 'drop' ears when young. If bred right the ears prick later. Colour, too, often changes as pups grow up."

"BERTHA" and "BENNY"
Wills "Puppies by Dawson-reprint of 1940" was issued in 1990. The following paragraph on the back of the card was written and signed by Lucy Dawson. "The offspring of famous parents (but quite unconcerned about such things) "Bertha" and "Benny" were only interested in meals, and in fights with their brothers and sisters. Their idea of fighting was to endeavour to eat each other, and they had a very good try to sample me with the aid of their sharp little needle-like teeth."

This is card No. 48 in a series of 50 from paintings by Arthur Wardle. Players issued this series in 1931, titled "Dogs by Wardle-Full Length. The following is printed on the back of the card: "Prior to 1910 the Sealyham Terrier was comparatively unknown to the English Show Bench, although the breed itself dates back to about the year 1860. It owes its existence to a Captain Edwardes, of Sealyham, Pembrokeshire, who bred it for his own sporting excursions, which took the form of bolting foxes or otters, or digging out badgers. The Sealyham still retains his sporting instincts and enjoys a day's ratting, stoat-hunting or badger digging; he is also a splendid companion. He has a short gaily carried tail and a long hard and wiry coat. Colour: white with slight black, lemon, or badger grey markings, which are usually on the head. Height: 9-11 in. Weight: about 18 lb."

Players issued this series of 50 cards titled "Dogs-Scenic Background" in 1925. A description is printed on the back of the card. "Of recent origin the fashionable Sealyham has Dandie Dinmont blood in his make-up, which gives him good solid bone and the short leg. His ears are carried slightly to the side of the head like those of an Airedale, and he has a powerful jaw. The docked tail is carried high as befits so "game" a dog, for the Sealyham will hunt anything, sticking to his quarry with the greatest determination. Weight about 18 lbs. Height 9 to 11 ins. Colour white with slight black, lemon or badger grey markings usually on the head."

Players issued this series of 50 cards from paintings by Peter Biegel in 1940. This lovely head study is No. 46 in the series. The following is printed on the back of the card: "In the mid-nineteenth century a Captain Edwardes of Sealy Ham House, Pembrokeshire, Wales was so dissatisfied with the sporting ability of the local terriers that he set out to breed one himself. His efforts met with success, for with the aid of various breeds he produced the small game Sealyham. The breed was first exhibited at the Kennel Club Show in 1910; since then it has improved still further, and the Sealyham is now an exceptionally attractive, strong and hard-working terrier. It is very popular as a domestic pet, for it enjoys human companionship and is possessed of considerable intelligence. An all white coat is the exhibitor's ideal, but small lemon or brown markings on the head are permissible."

Champion Scotia Stylist
Sealyham Terrier card from England Gallaher issued a series of 24 cards titled simply "Dogs" in 1934. The cards were enclosed in Gallaher's DeLuxe Cigarettes. "Prior to 1890 the Sealyham Terriers were little known outside Wales, and they seldom appeared on the show bench. Their origin is more or less wrapped in obscurity, but it is certain that they were used for numerous sporting excursions, such as bolting the fox or otter, or digging out the badger. The present day short-legged, smart workmanlike Terrier is somewhat different to his forebears. The illustration is of Champion Scotia Stylist, a well-known winner, Owned by Mrs. Cecil Barber." Hignett Bros. & Co. issued these colorful cards in their cigarette packages in 1936. A description of the Sealyham is printed on the back of the card. "The origin of this breed is traced to a Pembrokeshire sportsman, Capt. John Edwardes, who lived at Sealyham, and who crossed various Terrier breeds to give him a game, small dog of great working ability. By skillful breeding the type has been standardized, though some of the older enthusiasts aver that the modern type could not fulfill the breed's original purpose. Sealyhams were first exhibited as a breed at the Kennel Club Show in October, 1910, and have rapidly come to the front as show dog and companions."

"There is nothing on four legs, or two, for that matter, that he will not tackle, and be game to the last, and he'll hunt anything. There's this much about him, though he sticks to his quarry; a Sealyham badger-digging will not look at a rabbit. He is an ideal countryside companion. He should be white with black markings, and should have a good coat, head and front well poised forward, straight front and short legs.

"Beware, O! little pups; this banded stranger.
You ought to know, our scientists declare.
That black and yellow are a sign of danger
Expressly placed for your protection there.
But if some youthful, eager muzzle reaches
That all-too-well defended tail, what then?
Well, one small dose of real experience teaches
Far more than all the words of learned men."
