The new stamp was produced and issued by Altai in 2001.
The collapse of the Soviet Union has created a gold mine for stamp collectors.
The local governments have issued some wonderful stamps in an effort to sell
them to the world market and not even have to provide the associated service
of mailing letters with them. This is a real boon when you see the number of
Russian stamps issued below. Altai is also from the Russian block and is in
southeast Western Siberia. It was noted as the largest agricultural producer
in the Soviet Union.

An unusual stamp put out by Belgium in 2001.
Belgium is located in western Europe, bordering the North Sea, between
France and the Netherlands. It is about the size of Maryland. The climate
is temperate; mild winters, cool summers, rainy, humid, and cloudy.
The terrain is flat coastal plains in northwest, central rolling hills,
rugged mountains of Ardennes Forest in southeast. They have a couple of natural
resources; coal and natural gas. The environment is exposed to intense pressures
from human activities; urbanization, dense transportation network, industry
intense, animal breeding and crop cultivation. The people are 75%
Roman Catholic. The official languages; Dutch 60%, French 40%.

Bermuda was the first British place outside the United Kingdom to have its
own stamp issues. Bermuda (Somer's Isles) has 6 main islands and 120 others
in under 21 square miles. Resident population is 62,400. More than 80
percent are Bermudians. Bermuda issued this stamp in 1992.

This a wonderful stamp from Chuvashia issued in 2001.
Chuvashia borders both of Russia’s European and Asian regions along one of the
major tributaries of the Volga River. Chuvashia’s hops production and
the locals’ love of beer has earned the republic the nickname of "Russia’s Bavaria."
Chuvash people are Turkish; strangely they are not Muslim but Christian orthodox.

Dagestan is one of the republics of the former USSR. Located between the Caspian
Sea on the East and Caucasus mountains on the West, it is probably one of the
most attractive places in that part of the globe. Its area is close to that
of Scotland. With population of just above 2 million people, Dagestan is
the homeland to over 36 different nationalities, and each one of those
nationalities has its own unique language. Such combination of languages,
cultures, types of landscape and customs makes it a one of a kind place
in the world. These days, however, Dagestan is going through the times
of heavy unrest, both political and ethnical. Dagestan issued this stamp in 1999.

A nice head study of the Schipperke on this stamp issued by Hakasia in 2000.
Hakasia is located in the south of Serbia, next to the Sayan-Altay Mountains
and Yenisey River and the the north Altay Republic. Its capital is
the city of Abakan. The real name of Hakas people who speak Turkish is
Koray people. They are composed of four tribes. Hakasia is devoted
to its own language, culture and traditions and there is a university,
technical institute, and institutes for linguistic, historical and
literary researches in Hakasia. There are also various cultural and
artistic institutuins, 4 theatres, library and museums as well as music
and art schools. Hakas Turks are Christians, but they continue their
Shamanist beliefs and traditions. Agriculture, stockbreeding and timber
productions are the means of subsistence in the region. Breeding of sheep
horses, cattle, and beekeeping are also the signicant means of subsistence.

Karakalpakia, now under the domain of Uzbekistan, is on the edge
of the shrinking Aral Sea, which has recently
revealed a shocking scale of environmentally induced disease. Women and children
are most severely affected from the spread of pesticides and other pollutants as
the lake - once the fourth largest in the world - has turned into a desert,
its waters siphoned off to irrigate vast cotton fields and rice paddies in Central
Asia. Over 20 per cent of the young women, aged 13-19, have kidney disease, and another
23 per cent suffer from thyroid dysfunctions. And many women have high levels of
lead, zinc and strontium in their blood. Although the Aral Sea probably has less
than 10 years of life left, if nothing is done to salvage what remains of it,
the 1.1 million residents of Karakalpakia are under immediate health threats.
If nothing is done to improve the health of the people we may be witnessing the
end of another entire society as a result of human folly. This stamp was issued
in 1999.

This unusual stamp was issued in 1999 by Karelia.
Karelia is on the northwest corner of Russia, bordering Finland,
to which it once belonged.
The Republic of Karelia is a remarkably beautiful land of white nights,
boundless forests, and blue lakes. It is located on the border of Western
and Eastern Europe, on the border of cultures and religions. Severe beauty of
its nature, the climate, not too favourable in these latitudes, the
coexistence and intermingling of various peoples inhabiting this land for centuries
all that conditioned the character of the people living here: very laconic,
self-assured, contemplative, and tolerant people. It also accounts
for the fact that there is no national strife and terrorism in this land.

A 2001 issue from Tatarstan featuring three dogs; the Akita, the Schnauzer, and in the
foreground and outstanding is the Schipperke.
Tatarstan is one of the former Russian states along the Volga River. It has been
independent since 1994, but even a thousand years ago, it was known as Islam's
Northern Mecca.

Schipperke Tea and Tobacco Cards
SCHIPPERKE
This great card was issued by Molassine titled "Dogs at Work" in 1970
and they were enclosed singly in Vims Pet Foods.
The following is shown on the back of the card:
"Known as the Belgian Barge dog, he has a sort
of imbred affection for canals and tow-horses. He makes himself
useful in keeping watch on barges and river boats and in rat catching.
The name Schipperke is the flemish word for "Little Captain."
Schipperke Card 1 (issued by Molassine)... $8.95 each
THE SCHIPPERKE
This lovely card is from a series of 48 titled "Dogs A Series, in
1936 issued by Gallaher Tobacco. The artist is listed as Mabel Gears. The following is printed
on the back of the card:
"The Schipperke comes from Belgium where
it is used as a watch-dog on the barges, being specially bred for
this purpose. It is not, as is sometimes thought, a tail-less
breed, but the tail is removed soon after birth to prevent it
getting in the way when the dog is at work. One curious point
about the breed is that the mane starts from below the shoulder
and finishes behind the ears. The first specimen was brought to
England in the latter part of the 19th century." .
Schipperke Card 2 (issued by Gallaher)... $9.95 each
S C H I P P E R K E .
This painting is from a set of 25 cards titled "Dogs A Series" and was
issued in 1914. Shown on the back of the card:
"The nameSchipperke is
Flemish for Little Skipper, and was bestowed on these dogs
by the watermen of the Low Countries, who kept them as watch-dogs
on their canal barges. Although the Schipperke had been well-known
in Flanders for many years it was not introduced into this country
until about 1880. The introduction of the breed into England seems
to have increased its popularity among Belgian owners, and the
Schipperke Club of Brussels was founded in 1888. A good Schipperke
has a fox-like head, and small (not full) dark brown eyes. The
shoulders should be muscular and sloping, and the chest broad and
deep. The coat should be black, close and harsh, and erect and
thick round the neck so as to form a sort of mane. The weight
should be about 12 lbs. The Schipperke is a very lively,
affectionate animal, always on the alert and most inquisitive in
disposition." I have only one of these cards and it is not
in pristine condition
therefore I am discounting it to $19.95 instead of $24.95

* We can take visa, mastercard, discover, or PayPal. We try to keep
all stamps in stock, so we probably have the ones that you are looking
for.
* Truly one of the cheapest unique treats for yourself or a friend (great for
club trophies as well!)
* It is absolutely true that you will often find some of these stamps at very
reasonable prices -- some can be had for under a dollar. On the other hand, if
you add in the gas, hours, and hassles that it has taken to find them, you may
find it easier to just get them from us while we have them :*) I don't always
count on getting more in the near future. I get them when I can find them and
the stock is not always constant.
* I do have other breeds available. Let me know and perhaps I can do a page for
your breed.
