Rottweiler stamp from Abkhazia

The economy in the former Soviet Union is in very sad shape. To bolster their income, the independent Russian states have started issuing topical stamps in the hope that the world market will buy them and not require the associated postal services. As of this date Abkhazia is a fragment of the old USSR, its either a part of Georgia or a new country, depending on who you ask. They started printing their own passports in Oct.. 1998, but it's unclear how universally they will be recognized. The Republic of Abkhazia covers 3,300 square miles between the eastern shores of the Black Sea and the crestline of the main Caucasus range, from the rivers Psou(in the North) and ingur (in the South). The coastal valleys are humid and subtropical. At higher altitudes the weather ranges from moderately cold to such freezing temperatures that the snow never melts.

Rottweiler stamp from Afghanistan

This first stamp is from Afghanistan, issued in 1998. I expect that it will remain available for some time.
Afghanistan is a mountainous land-locked country located in Central Asia. It has a history and culture that goes back over 5000 years. Throughout its long, splendid, and sometimes chaotic history, this area of the world has been known by various names. In ancient times, its inhabitants called the land Aryana. In the medieval era, it was called Khorasan, and in modern times, its people have decided to call it Afghanistan. The exact population of Afghanistan is unknown, however, it is estimated to be somewhere around 21-26 million. It is slightly smaller than Texas. They have cold winters and hot summers. Some current issues are limited fresh water resources, inadequate supplies of potable water, overgrazing and deforestation. The capital is Kabul. The majority of the population continues to suffer from insufficient food, clothing, housing, and medical care, problems exacerbated by military operations and political uncertainties.

Rottweiler stamp from Altai

This stamp was issued in 2004.
The collapse of the Soviet Union has created a gold mine for stamp collectors. The local governments have issued some wonderful stamps in an effort to sell them to the world market and not even have to provide the associated service of mailing letters with them. This is a real boon when you see the number of Russian stamps issued below. Altai is also from the Russian block and is in southeast Western Siberia. It was noted as the largest agricultural producer in the Soviet Union.
The disintegration of the Soviet Union is bringing to light the enormous diversity of the indigenous people who were kept under its rule. The Altaics were a nomadic, herding people for millennia. They had a native language and customs. Several related groups are now considered more self-ruling, such as Dagestan, Kyrgyzstan and Altai. In 1997, Altai started to issue unique stamps and some of them were of different breeds of dogs. By 2000, they issued this attractive Pomeranian stamp for our collections.

This stamp was issued in 1998 by Bashkortostan, a part of the old Soviet Union.
The Republic of Bashkortostan lies in the South Ural Mountains bordering with Tatarstan and the Udmurt Republic. In 1921 Bashkortostan was forced to become an official Autonomous Soviet Republic as a part of the Russian Federation. By 1937 Bashkortostan accepted the constitution of the USSR, in which the republic was declared a state. This status was a formality due to the absence of sovereign rights. In 1990,upon the collapse of the Soviet Union, Bashkortostan declared its state sovereignty.

Rottweiler stamp from Benin

Present day Benin was the site of Dahomey, a prominant West African kingdom that rose in the 15th century. The territory became a French Colony in 1872 and achieved independence on Autust 1, 1960, as the Republic of Benin. A succession of military Governments ended in 1972 with the rise to powere of Mathieu KEREKOU and the establishment of a government based on Marxist-Leninist principles. A move to representative government began in 1989. Two years later, free elections ushered in former Prime Minister Nicephor SOGLO as presdent, marking the first successful transfer of power in Africa from a dictatorship to a democracy. KEREKOU was returned to power by elections held in 1996 and 2001, though some irregularities were alleged.
The climate is tropical, hot, humid in south; semiarid in north; mostly flat terrain with some hills and low mountains; they have some envronmental issues such as inadequate supplies of potable water, and poaching of wildlife. The official capital is Porto-Novo; Cotonou is the seat of government.

Rottweiler stamp from Russia

This stamp was issued by a Russian state, Ossetia in 1998.
I found some very interesting information when searching for a history of Ossetia. It lies near the Black Sea in the Russian region of Georgia. Today’s 700,000 North and South Ossetians are herdsmen and horsemen, probably descended from the Scythian warrior nomads of ancient Greek times.
Like the first settlers of Yorkshire they use the word ‘Don’ for river and, like the people of Ossett, they chose the fleece as an emblem. A fleece also appears at the center of Ossett's coat of arms.
Is there a connection? Some versions of the Greek legend of Jason and the Argonauts tell us that on his long homeward voyage Jason took the Golden Fleece by river journey from the Black Sea to the North Sea – a route well known to the Vikings who are thought to have founded Ossett. In addition, Ossett is a Viking place name that may mean 'Osla's seat' or 'ridge camp'. Did Vikings found Ossetia? Perhaps. In the meantime, the local government of both North Ossetia and South Ossetia have issued a few fascinating stamps, including this lovely Rottweiler,

Rottweiler stamp from Gambia

Gambia issued a wonderful set of cartoon breeds in 1997. This is the Rottweiler representative from that set. What a great caricature of a deserving breed.
The Gambia is a long and narrow country in West Africa that parallels and takes in both sides of the Gambia River. It is surrounded by Senegal on all sides, except on the Atlantic coast, and for this reason the two countries have a lot of ethnic and cultural ties. In contrast to Senegal, a former French colony, The Gambia was colonized by Britain and gained its Independence on February 18, 1965.

Rottweiler stamp from Guinea

This wonderful puppy is from the country of Guinea. The stamps from this set are very unusual with the diagonal perforations and an image of the fullgrown dog on the lower left.
Guinea is partial heir to the series of west African empires that, at their height before the arrival of the Europeans, cast significant political and commercial influence over many peoples from Guinea's Atlantic coast to the southern edge of the Sahara. The empires of Ghana, Mali, and Songhai spanned the period from about the 10th to the 15th centuries. French military penetration into the area began in the mid-19th century. Guinea became an independent republic in 1958.

Rottweiler stamp from Guyana

Guyana is a little country, which lies on the North Eastern shoulder of South America near the equator. Said to be the legendary El Dorado, Guyana is the only English-speaking country located in South America. The name 'Guyana' is derived from an Amerindian word meaning; land of many waters - and indeed it is a land of many waters- with three mighty rivers and many tributaries, creeks and waterfalls.
The British founded Guyana in 1781. It passed for a while to the French, who largely rebuilt it, and in 1784 to the Dutch, who called the capital Stabroek. Regaining control in 1812, the British government renamed it British Guiana. In 1966 it became an independent Guyana.

Rottweiler stamp from Karakalpakia Rottweiler stamp from Karakalpakia

Karakalpakia, now under the domain of Uzbekistan, is on the edge of the shrinking Aral Sea, which has recently revealed a shocking scale of environmentally induced disease. Women and children are most severely affected from the spread of pesticides and other pollutants as the lake - once the fourth largest in the world - has turned into a desert, its waters siphoned off to irrigate vast cotton fields and rice paddies in Central Asia. Over 20 per cent of the young women, aged 13-19, have kidney disease, and another 23 per cent suffer from thyroid dysfunctions. And many women have high levels of lead, zinc and strontium in their blood. Although the Aral Sea probably has less than 10 years of life left, if nothing is done to salvage what remains of it, the 1.1 million residents of Karakalpakia are under immediate health threats. If nothing is done to improve the health of the people we may be witnessing the end of another entire society as a result of human folly.

Rottweiler stamp from Sierra
Leone

This stamp from Sierra Leone in Africa was actually produced to commemorate the Chinese Year of the Dog in 1994. You can see the emblem to that effect in the upper right corner.
Sierra Leone was a British colony to which freed slaves returned in the late 1700's. After Independence in 1961, a small political elite, who exclusively profited from the lucrative trade in diamonds, dominated successive governments. Little of this national income trickled down to benefit the rest of the population. After much fighting and insurrection the UN was finally convinced to send a peacekeeping force that was in the news for many months.

The country boasts a wealth of natural attractions, including the famed Ngorongoro crater and the formidable Mount Kilimanjaro. It is also home to magnificent game reserves: Gombe Stream National Park, with its chimpanzee sanctuary; and the breathtaking plains of the Serengeti National Park, which hosts the annual migration of at least two million wildebeest with leopards and lions hot on their heels. Add to this the lovely beaches of the exotic islands of Zanzibar, Pemba, and Mafia. Tanzania recently issued a couple different sets of dog stamps, including this Rottweiler.

Rottweiler stamp from Touva Rottweiler stamp from Touva

The above issues are from Touva in 1999.
Touva (often spelled Tuva) is a country in the southern area of Siberia. It's a unique place with the landscapes ranging from the desert to the permafrost, and local fauna-from camels to reindeers. Touva is known as almost the only place in the world where shamanism, a very ancient religion, is preserved, kept and cultivated in its original form.
The republic of Touva lies at the upper reaches of the Siberian Yenisey River and forms a barrier between Russia and Mongolia. Since its independence from the former Soviet Union, Tuva continues to struggle to work on the appropriate way to safeguard and develop its own identity and sovereignty going through the difficult changes from a command-orientated planned economy towards an open market economy. Like so many other former Russian states, the diversity of the people is starting to be felt as the original culture, traditions and religion are gaining more followers.

What lovely stamps issued by Udmurtia. The left in 1999, the right in 2000.
Udmurtia is approximately midway between Moscow to the Urals. Its land is a hilly wooden plain with numerous swamps, springs and rivers. Its climate is considered a bit too wet and not healthy. Summer is short, rainy and cool; autumn is very cloudy (often there are almost no sunny days from October till January), foggy and rainy. This not very friendly land was originally inhabited by Udmurts (or Votyaks). These peaceful and quiet Finnish people maintained their culture heritage there at least for five thousand years. Their religion is also ancient. They worship the God (called Inmar, The Highest Being) and His assistants governing various elements. With the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Udmurtia became one of the local republics and as such they now issue stamps including these lovely Rottweilers.

Rottweiler Souvenir Sheet from Grenada

Rottweiler Souvenir Sheet from Grenada Grenada is described as a spice island, since it produces large quantities of cloves and mace and about a third of the world’s nutmeg. It also grows cacao, sugar, bananas and a wide variety of other fruit and vegetables. Some of its beaches, specially Grand Anse, a dazzling two-mile stretch of white sand, are very fine, but the rest of the island is just as beautiful, rising from a generally rugged coast to a spectacular mountainous interior. The island is green, well forested and cultivated and is blessed with plenty of rain in the wet season. Grenada is the most southerly of the Windward Islands. In contrast to other Windward Islands which have had a similar history of disputed ownership between the French and English, the French cultural influence in Grenada has completely died out. The population is very young; 38% are under 15 years old and nearly 26% are in the 15-29 years’ age bracket. Grenada has two dependencies in the Grenadines chain, Carriacou and Petit (often spelt Petite) Martinique.

Rottweiler Souvenir Sheet from Kuril Islands

The Kuril Islands are a chain of 56 large and small volcanic islands in far eastern Russia, extending from northeastern Hokkaido Island in Japan to southern Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia. The Kurils are heavily forested and contain many active volcanoes. Both the Russians and Japanese settled the Kurils in the 18th century. In 1875 Japan ceded to Russia the nearby island of Sakhalin in exchange for full Japanese possession of the Kurils. The islands were returned to the USSR by an agreement reached at the Yalta Conference during World War II (1939-1945). After the war Japan maintained a claim to the southernmost islands, and the territorial dispute prohibited the countries from signing a peace treaty. That dispute has not been settled to this day.

Rottweiler stamp from Tadjikistan

Rottweiler stamp from Tadjikistan Tadjikistan plays a fascinating role in the power struggle in central Asia. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the declaration of independence by the former Soviet republics, Tadjikistan acquired national sovereignty for the first time in history. Inexperience, in conjunction with a particular clan-oriented, regional-based, political culture established the foundation for the prolonged conflict that ensued in post-Soviet Tadjikistan. The intensity of this conflict has been further fueled by the ethnic and historical externalities of the unresolved political situation in Afghanistan.
Today, Russia's interests in Tadjikistan center around preserving its economic and geopolitical position in Central Asia. These interests, however, conflict with those of the newly independent states in the region, which are focused on preventing Tadjikistan from becoming a "Russian protectorate." In this respect, resolution of the civil war in Tadjikistan is part of the broader problems of reconstituting global spheres of influence and establishing a "new world order" in the wake of the Soviet collapse.
In addition to the seemingly obvious military, strategic, and geopolitical factors, there are critical economic issues that underlie Russia's interests in retaining Tadjikistan within its sphere of influence. Tadjikistan is a mountainous country, rich in fuel and mineral deposits. Tadjikistan's potential to generate hydroelectric power is second only to Russia among CIS member states. Moreover, not so long ago, Tadjikistan was Moscow's main supplier of several minerals, as well as cotton. Finally, the country has the resources and infrastructure to become a major industrial power in the region.
This country is worth studying on its own and now it has issued some of the nicest stamps available from any country.

On the other hand, if you add in the gas, hours, and hassles that it has taken to find them, you may find it easier to just get them from us while we have them :*) I don't always count on getting more in the near future. I get them when I can find them and the stock is not always constant.

* I do have other breeds available. Let me know and perhaps I can do a page for your breed.
