Puli and Pumi Stamps

Puli stamp from Bhutan

Bhutan is a tiny, landlocked country, squeezed between China and India, the two most populous countries. It takes its native name -- Druk Yul -- from the fierce storms that sweep down out of the Himalayan Mountains. Druk Yul means "land of the thunder dragon." Bhutan is the last surviving Buddhist kingdom in the Himalayas and its deeply devout Buddhist culture bears a strong resemblance to that found in Tibet. Wary of foreign influence, Bhutan has full diplomatic ties with only 16 countries and sightseers were barred from the country until 1974. Even now, Bhutan limits the number of tourists to just 4,000 a year.

Puli stamp from Hungary

It is not surprising that most of the Puli and Pumi stamps come from Hungary, since they are Hungarian breeds. But in fact, this is a bit unusual. If you look at the other breed pages, you will find that most breeds are not even honored in their own countries and some of the countries who do recognize them with a stamp would amaze you. But in this case, some of the nicest Puli stamps do come from Hungary, such as this one issued in 1967.

Puli stamp from Kamchatka Puli stamp from Kamchatka Puli stamp from Kamchatka

The economy in Russia since the break up of the Soviet Union has such high inflation that stamps that were previously issued are not of enough value to mail a letter any more, so to remedy the situation, the local Post Offices have taken blocks of "old" printed stamps and overprinted them with a new image and a new value. The Puli shown above is one of these "Russian Overprints" from Kamchatka. These 'overprints' stamps originally came in a set of five different colored stamps all with the same overprint. Last time that I got in some overprints, I assumed that they would remain available. (see detail to the right) I was wrong and I never saw more copies of those. I expect these to be equally as rare and collectable. There is no telling how many of the overprints they produced (not many), since they were never designed to be sold on the world market. They are of value only for a short while until the actual stamps can be printed. Unfortunately I have not been able to obtain the stamp that was ultimtely issued to replace the overprint. I have three of the Puli overprints left as shown above.

Kamchatka, a peninsula comparable in size to Japan, is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, as well as the Bering and Okhotskoe Seas, and contains the last stretches of Siberian taiga. Russia's large volcanic belt, made up of 28 active craters, stretches along its shore. Though the flora and fauna, as is characteristic of northern regions, is not marked by diversity, more than half of the world's Steller's Sea Eagles, as well as the largest population of brown bears, are found here.
In the center of Kamchatka is found Eurasia's only Geyser Valley. More than 150 thermal springs are scattered throughout the peninsula.
Kamchatka is very sparsely populated, averaging less than 1 person per square kilometer. Most of the inhabitants live in the regional capital, but a traditional way of life continues in the peninsula's many scattered villages.
Despite its pristine appearance, however, Kamchatka struggles with pollution problems, much of it stemming from the large military presence on the Peninsula.

Puli stamp from Angola

Now, this stamp is really different for any breed that I have come across. It was issued in Mongolia and in addition to the lovely head study, it shows the Puli, once again, herding cattle, but this time, they appear to be water buffalo. The stamp was issued in 1978.

Puli stamp from Mordovia Puli stamp from Mordovia

Both of the above stamps were issued by Mordovia; the one on the left in 1996 and the right one in 1999.
Mordovia is one of the Russian States that has started to issue stamps specifically designed to be sold to collectors so that they receive the money, but don't necessarily have to provide the accompanying postal services. No matter what the reason, it is a good excuse to be offered such stamps for such a lovely breed.
Mordovia is located between Moscow and the Volga River and is bordered by the republic of Chuvashia on the east. Mordovia is one of the 21 Russian republics, which are the administrative units with the greatest amount of autonomy within the new Russian Federation. Mordovia is a largely agricultural region.

Puli Souvenir Sheets

Puli Souvenir Sheet from Grenada

Puli Souvenir Sheet from Grenada This beautiful souvenir sheet with the quote from William Wordsworth(1770-1850) was issued by Grenada in 2000.
Grenada is described as a spice island, because it produces large quantities of cloves and mace and about a third of the world’s nutmeg. It also grows cacao, sugar, bananas and a wide variety of other fruit and vegetables. Some of its beaches, especially Grand Anse, a dazzling two-mile stretch of white sand, are very fine, but the rest of the island is just as beautiful, rising from a generally rugged coast to a spectacular mountainous interior. The island is green, well forested and cultivated and is blessed with plenty of rain in the wet season. Grenada is the most southerly of the Windward Islands. In contrast to other Windward Islands, which have had a similar history of disputed ownership between the French and English, the French cultural influence in Grenada has completely died out. The population is very young; 38% are under 15 years old and nearly 26% are in the 15-29 years’ age bracket.

Puli Souvenir Sheet from Somalia

Puli Souvenir Sheet from Somalia Somalia, also called the Somalia Democratic Republic, is located on the Horn of Africa, the easternmost part of the African continent. Although it gained its independence in 1960, nearly constant unrest has kept it from establishing a lasting presence in the area.

Pumi Stamps

Puli stamp from Finland

During World War II, Finland was able to successfully defend its freedom and fend off invasions by the Soviet Union and Germany. In the subsequent half century, the Finns have made a remarkable transformation from a farm/forest economy to a diversified modern industrial economy; per capita income is now on par with Western Europe. As a member of the European Union, Finland was the only Nordic state to join the euro system at its initiation in January 1999. It is slightly smaller than Montana. The climate of Finland is cold temperate; potentially subarctic, but comparatively mild because of moderating influence of the North Atlantic Current, Baltic Sea, and more than 60,000 lakes. The official language is Finnish. The capitol is Helsinki.

* We can take visa, mastercard, discover, or PayPal. We try to keep all stamps in stock, so we probably have the ones that you are looking for.

* Truly one of the cheapest unique treats for yourself or a friend (great for club trophies as well!)

* It is absolutely true that you will often find some of these stamps at very reasonable prices -- some can be had for under a dollar. On the other hand, if you add in the gas, hours, and hassles that it has taken to find them, you may find it easier to just get them from us while we have them :*) I don't always count on getting more in the near future. I get them when I can find them and the stock is not always constant.

* I do have other breeds available. Let me know and perhaps I can do a page for your breed.
