The Newfoundland Dog has the distinction of being the FIRST animal of any sort to be commemorated by ANY country. Newfoundland issued this stamp in 1894 in the 1/2-penny denomination. Several versions of this were produced including some in black, some in red and some in orange. I still love this stamp. How would they have known that the other 2,000 stamps showing dogs would be available within the next 100 years?

Once again, Newfoundland saw fit to honor their namesake dog in 1930. This is a 14-cent stamp and surprisingly enough is harder to find than the first one. I have one unmounted copy of it. It has a slight postmark and was used (no gum left on the back.)

This wonderful Landseer is a wonderful place to start. It comes from Afghanistan in 1998 and the set included such diverse dogs as Borzoi, Bloodhound and Chow Chow.
Afghanistan is a mountainous land-locked country located in Central Asia. It has a history and culture that goes back over 5000 years. Throughout its long, splendid, and sometimes chaotic history, this area of the world has been known by various names. In ancient times, its inhabitants called the land Aryana. In the medieval era, it was called Khorasan, and in modern times, its people have decided to call it Afghanistan. The exact population of Afghanistan is unknown, however, it is estimated to be somewhere around 21-26 million. It is slightly smaller than Texas. They have cold winters and hot summers. Some current issues are limited fresh water resources, inadequate supplies of potable water, overgrazing and deforestation.The capital is Kabul. The majority of the population continues to suffer from insufficient food, clothing, housing, and medical care, problems exacerbated by military operations and political uncertainties.

Angola put out a set that was sort of comparable to the Gambia ones below -- unattractive at first, but it grows on you. The dog is listed as a St. John's Water Dog.
Angola is in Africa near the Congo and on the Atlantic Coast. Portuguese is the official language of the government and business, but only about 42 percent of the population of 10 million is literate, 56 percent of males and 28 percent of females. The current issues facing the country are overuse of pastures and subsequent soil erosion attributable to population pressures; desertification; deforestation of tropical rain forest, in response to both international demand for tropical timber and to domestic use as fuel, resulting in loss of biodiversity; soil erosion contributing to water pollution and siltation of rivers and dams; inadequate supplies of potable water. Angola is a developing country at war, and civil unrest has been ongoing since the country's 1975 independence from Portugal.

Newfoundland stamp from Antigua and Barbuda

Antigua and Barbuda are a pair of sister islands that were sort of forced to become a combined country when Great Britain "gave them their freedom". There is some strife between the two islands. In 1994, for the year of the dog, Antigua and Barbuda issued two sets of dog stamps, one for large dogs and one for small dogs. This nifty Newfoundland was in the large dog set. They are not rare.

The economy in Russia since the break up of the Soviet Union has had such high inflation that stamps that were previously issued are

not of enough value to mail a letter any more, so to remedy the situation, the local Post Offices have taken blocks of four previously printed stamps and overprinted them with different images and different values. The Newfoundland shown above on the right is one of these "Russian Overprints". These stamps come in a sets of five, each done in five different colors. Last time that I got in some overprints, I assumed that they would remain available. I was wrong and I never saw more copies of those. I expect these to be equally as rare and collectable. There is no telling how many of the overprints they produced, since they were never designed to be sold on the world market, will have to be changed as the inflation continues unchecked.
On the left, above is the stamp that was finally produced and where the overprint got its image. It is from Baskortonstan, a Russian local government near Chuvashia. To the left is a sample of how a set of four Greyhound overprints was mounted.

An interesting stamp from Bulgaria in 1997.
The Bulgars, A Central Asian Turkic Tribe, merged with the local slavic inhabitants in the late 7th century to form the first Bulgarian state. In succeeding centuries, Bulgaria struggled with the Byzantine Empire to assert its place in the Balkans, but by the end of the 14th century the country was overrun by the Ottoman Turks. Bulgaria regained its independence in 1878, but having fought on the losing side in both World Wars, it fell within the Soviet sphere of influence and became a Peoples Republic in 1946. Communist domination ended in 1990. The country is slightly larger than Tennessee. The capital is Sofia.

Canada issued a set of stamps honoring their native dogs. In addition to the Newfoundland, these included the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, the Canadian Eskimo dog and the Tahl Tan Bear Dog.

A new stamp issued by Fujeira in 2001.
Fujeira is one of the seven Emirates that combined in 1974 to form the United Arab Emirates. The name Fujeira refers to the spring of water beneath one of the mountains.

Occasionally you run across a stamp that wins the prize for ugly. At first glance, this stamp is in strong contention :-). But it IS a Newfoundland and the more I look at it the more the soft greens and spare image grow on me. It would not be my first choice, but should be included in any collection of Newfoundlands.
The Gambia is a long and narrow country in West Africa that parallels and takes in both sides of the Gambia River. It is surrounded by Senegal on all sides, except on the Atlantic coast, and for this reason the two countries have a lot of ethnic and cultural ties. In contrast to Senegal, a former French colony, The Gambia was colonized by Britain and gained its Independence on February 18, 1965.

Instead of coming from a set of stamps, this left hand Newfoundland from Guinea was simply paired with a St. Bernard. Both images have the legs cut off -- the bane of dog photographers. This is a recent issue from about 1998. The stamp on the right is also recent and is from a very expensive set with an Airedale and a Bernese Mtn. Dog as the other two stamps.
Guinea is partial heir to the series of west African empires that, at their height before the arrival of the Europeans, cast significant political and commercial influence over many peoples from Guinea's Atlantic coast to the southern edge of the Sahara. The empires of Ghana, Mali, and Songhai spanned the period from about the 10th to the 15th centuries. French military penetration into the area began in the mid-19th century. Guinea became an independent republic in 1958.

Karelia is one of the new Soviet states that has started to issue postal collections. I am not sure if this is a faded Newfoundland, or an overcoated Leonberger. The set has no indication of what the producers intended. Neat stamp, though.
The Republic of Karelia is a remarkably beautiful land of white nights, boundless forests, and blue lakes. It is located on the border of Western and Eastern Europe, on the border of cultures and religions. Severe beauty of its nature, the climate, not too favourable in these latitudes, the coexistence and intermingling of various peoples inhabiting this land for centuries all that cnditioned the character of the people living here: very laconic, self-assured, contemplative, and tolerant people. It also accounts for the fact that there is no national strife and terrorism in this land.

The break-up of the Soviet Union is creating a windfall for collectors of topical stamps. In an effort to generate hard currency, the local governments are issuing a number of lovely stamps in the hope that people around the world will buy them and at the same time, the government will not have to provide the accompanying service of actually mailing the letters. This stamp from Komi is just such a lucky find. It was issued in 1997 and should remain available for some time.
The Komi Republic is situated in the extreme North-East part of Russia. It is a multinational state, since the population of Komi Republic is estimated at 1.2 million citizen and consists of 100 nationalities. The Komi Republic is now a democratic legal state included into the Russian Federation. The republic has unique stocks of mineral resources thanks to their location, diversity and quality.

Each year Monaco puts out a dog stamp in honor of their International Dog Show. 1993 was the year for the Newfoundland Dog -- it is listed as the Terre Nueve. These are surprisingly hard to find but I pick them up whenever I come across one.
Economic development was spurred in the late 19th century with a railroad linkup to France and the opening of a casino. Since then, the principality's mild climate, splendid scenery, and gambling facilities have made Monaco world famous as a tourist and recreation center. Monaco is located in western Europe, bordering the Mediterranean Sea on the southern coast of France, near the border of Italy. It is about three times the size of The Mall in Washington DC. It has no natural resources and no natural hazards. It is the second smallest independent state in the world (after Holy See); almost entirely urban with a population of about 31,987. Its official language is French, with English, Italian and Monegasque. It is a constitutional monarchy. Its independence was in 1419 (beginning of the rule by the House of Grimaldi). The Chief of State: Prince RAINIER III (since 9 May 1949); Heir Apparent Prince ALBERT Alexandre Louis Pierre, son of the Monarch (born 14 March 1958). There are no elections, the monarchy is hereditary. Monaco does not have an embassy in the US.

Para Timor produced this lovely body pose and headstudy in 2000. East Timor is an area of Indonesia that recently voted to become independent. There is much unrest still since the current government does not want to give up power.

This Newfoundland portrait was issued by Paraguay. The stamp is actually printed in Portugal, but that is not uncommon. The portrait is from a painting by Ellen Krebs done in 1983, although the stamp was not put out until 1986. This stamp is 17 years old and I have not seen another copy in several years.
In the disastrous War of the Triple Alliance (1865-70), Paraguay lost two-thirds of all adult males and much of its territory. It stagnated economically for the next half century. In the Chaco War of 1932-35, large economically important areas were won from Bolivia. The 35-year military dictatorship of Alfredo STROESSNER was overthrown in 1989, and, despite a marked increase in political infighting in recent years, relatively free and regular presidential elections have been held since then.
Paragury is located in Central South America, northeast of Argentina. It is slightly smaller than California. It has a subtropical to temperate climate. The capital is Asuncion. A large percentage of the population derives their living from agricultutal activity, often on a subsistence basis. It is landlocked; lies between Argentina, Bolivia, and Brazil; the population is concentrated in southern part of the country.

Although many people in North America believe that the islands of St. Pierre and Miquelon are part of Canada or some type of autonomous region, the islands are an integral part of the French Republic. A specific series of institutions and limited autonomy was indeed granted by France but the islands are and shall remain French. These islands about 15 miles south of Newfoundland, about 800 miles North-East of Boston, and are at the top of the Saint-Pierre Banks near the Grand Banks of Newfoundland. So, it is not a surprise that they have a history of issuing Newfoundland dog stamps. The stamps on the bottom were issued in 1942 and although I have only seen the two above, they originally came is at least five different colors and denominations. The stamp at the top was put out for Christmas 1998, showing Santa delivering his gifts with a sleigh pulled by a wonderful Newfoundland dog.

I have done a lot of research on this stamp, but am still confused on exactly what happened. Apparently the Kathiri State of Seiyun was formed in late 1966 and these issues were released after the National Liberation Front took control of the state 1 October 1967. There is at least one article that claims that some of these issues were used postally. The Federation of South Arabia issues were declared invalidate only in 1969 by the postal authorities of the People's Republic of South Arabia. But between 1966 and 1968, South Arabia issued some lovely stamps, many of them using paintings of the masters. This one is a Renoir called "Madame Charpentier et ses enfants." For all of the confusion, there is no doubt about the wonderful Landseer at the feet of the children.

This lovely headstudy was issued by Tanzania in 1993. It comes from a set of six dogs, including other unusual breeds such as the Gordon Setter. It should remain available for some time.
Tanzania, the largest country in East Africa, is renowned for its magnificent wildlife, lakes, mountains, and scenery. The country boasts a wealth of natural attractions, including the famed Ngorongoro crater and the formidable Mount Kilimanjaro. It is also home to magnificent game reserves: Gombe Stream National Park, with its chimpanzee sanctuary; and the breathtaking plains of the Serengeti National Park, which hosts the annual migration of at least two million wildebeest with leopards and lions hot on their heels. Add to this the lovely beaches of the exotic islands of Zanzibar, Pemba, and Mafia.

This is a most notable Newfoundland stamp from Uganda in Africa, showing a full-coated Newfoundland rescuing (or playing with) a local child. I think that this is an interesting stamp for any Newfoundland collection.
Uganda achieved independence from the UK in 1962. The dictorial regime of Idi AMIN (1971-1979) was responsible for the deaths of some 300,000 opponents; Guerilla war and human rights abuses under Milton OBOTE (1980-85) claimed another 100,000 lives. During the 1990's the government promulgated non-party presidential and legislative elections. Uganda is located in eastern Africa, west of Kenya. The climate is tropical; generally rainy with two dry seasons (December-February, June to August). Uganda is landlocked; fertile, well-watered country with many lakes and rivers. English is the official Language, taught in grade schools. The capital is Kampala. Coffee is the major export crop and accounts for the bulk of export revenues.

Zaire in Africa recently issued this lovely headstudy of a Newfoundland. It is listed as a Terre Nueve and is beautifully done, but comes from a terribly expensive set.

one of the Windward Islands in the E. West Indies. It is an independent nation made up of this island and the S. Grenadines, a former British colony. This souvenir sheet was issued by the Grenada Grenadines a couple of years ago. It has a wonderful mix of breeds in addition to the lovely Newfoundland in the upper right corner .

This wonderful souvenir sheet was issued by Mali. I think that it shows the Newfoundland in one of its more noble stances.
Landlocked in West Africa, straddling the Sahara, Mali is one of the poorest and most remote nations of the world.

This incredible stamp was issued in 1991 by the island of Malagasy. Malagasy which we know as Madagascar, is an island to the east of Africa. It is a very high denomination stamp and quite expensive. Even though the main stamp is of German Shepherds, the Newfoundland simply steals the lay-out and the design.

Again, we have the pairing of the German Shepherd and the Newfoundland, obviously because they are both rescue dogs, but this time, the Newfie is placed in his strongest environment -- water rescue. This stamp was issued by Guinea in 1999, but is not yet in common circulation.

Masters of artistic license, this is an Arabic version of the Newfoundland Dog. It was issued in 1973 and the ones that I have bear the postal cancelation of the date of issue September 30, 1973. This stamp has grown on me over the years, and I think that it deserves an historic spot in Newfoundland collections.
The State of Oman is one of the United Arab Emirates.

Staffa is a tiny uninhabited island in the inner Hedrides. It is famous for it rock formations and probably for its collectable stamps more than anything else. Most of the islands around Scotland are privately owned and have the right to issue their own stamps. If a population lives on the island, the stamps are legal postage for sending mail to the main land. They are not of value for sending it outside of Scotland or back to the island. But since Staffa is not inhabited, the stamps are for collecting only. This one is an interesting story, since the scenery would indicate at St. Bernard, but the dog is obviously a Newfoundland rescuing the child.

This is a fascinating souvenir sheet put out by Mali in 1996. I am not sure what the connection is with the different dogs. At first I thought that it was rescue dogs, but the Old English Sheepdog doesn't fit that job. Then, I thought maybe the ocean was the connection, but that can't be either. Nonetheless, it is truly an interesting souvenir sheet and a necessity for those collecting Newfoundland items.

We have one last fun item. This is a sheet of dog stamps from Yakutz, a Russian state. At least the Newfoundland was given center stage.
Most people know Yakutia from the game of Risk along with Kamchatka and Irikutz. Actually, Yakutia is the largest region in Siberia, known as Sasha-Yakutia. This is probably one of the most amazing mini sheets ever produced. There are forty breeds represented and they have managed to run a perforation line through nearly every one. Those that were missed by the holes are covered by a postmark! My, what an accomplishment. The Newfoundland is shown enlarged to the right.

I get them when I can find them and the stock is not always constant.
