Stamps of Mastiffs
Mastiffs are such an interesting group of dogs! Since there are so many nice stamps and cards, I am splitting them into four pages. You can find the others here:

Cards of Other Mastiffs
Bull Mastiff Stamps
Bull Mastiff Cards

On this page, are the stamps of all of the Mastiff type of dogs except Bull Mastiffs. I know that some of these are specific breeds and others, espeically the art work of old, will be more of a "type" of dog. They are all beautiful in their own way.

Afghanistan Mastiff stamp from
Afghanistan

These lovely stamps were put out in 2000 by Afghanistan.
Afghanistan is a mountainous land-locked country located in Central Asia. It has a history and culture that goes back over 5000 years. Throughout its long, splendid, and sometimes chaotic history, this area of the world has been known by various names. In ancient times, its inhabitants called the land Aryana. In the medieval era, it was called Khorasan, and in modern times, its people have decided to call it Afghanistan. The exact population of Afghanistan is unknown, however, it is estimated to be somewhere around 21-26 million. It is slightly smaller than Texas. They have cold winters and hot summers. Some current issues are limited fresh water resources, inadequate supplies of potable water, overgrazing and deforestation. The capital is Kabul. The majority of the population continues to suffer from insufficient food, clothing, housing, and medical care, problems exacerbated by military operations and political uncertainties.

Mastiff stamp from
Ajman

This beautiful painting by artist Jan Fyt was issued by Ajman in 1968. The title of the painting is "Le Chien Et L'enfant" Ajman is the smallest of the United Arab Emirates. It is immediately to the north of and mostly surrounded by Sharjah. Like most of the country, Ajman is in the process of changes which amount to a transformation. The central area is rapidly being modernized and it is clear that Ajman has no intention of being left behind the other Emirates. It is here that the Victory speedboats are built and Ajman is determined to enjoy a share of the United Arab Emirates' victories for itself.

Mastiff stamp from Antigua

This attractive stamp was issued by the Caribbean Island nation of Antigua and Barbuda to commemorate the Year of the Dog. The dog is listed as a Mastiff but is probably a Bull Mastiff. It is a fairly recent issue and came with a set of 12 Large breeds, Dogs of the World. They also issued a page of 12 Small breeds in the same year.
Antigua & Barbuda are a pair of sister islands in the north east Caribbean that became a nation when Great Britain "gave them their freedom." The two islands are not always at ease with each other since Barbuda contains 40% of the land but only 10% of the people and they prefer to not be developed by outsiders. In 1994, they put out two sets of stamps in honor of The Year of the Dog. There were 12 large breeds and 12 small breeds. This lovely Dalmatian was in the set of large breeds. This is a fairly common stamp.

Mastiff stamp from
Askamyana

One of the many Russian states, Askamyana.
The economy in Russia since the break up of the Soviet Union has such high inflation that stamps that were previously issued are not of enough value to mail a letter any more, so to remedy the situation, the local Post Offices have taken blocks of five "old" printed stamps and overprinted them with a new image and a new value. The Mastiff shown above is one of these "Russian Overprints" from Askamyana. These stamps come in a set of five different colored stamps (shown on the right) all with the same overprint. Last time that I got in some overprints, I assumed that they would remain available. I was wrong and I never saw more copies of those. I expect these to be equally as rare and collectable. There is no telling how many of the overprints they produced (not many), since they were never designed to be sold on the world market. They are of value only for a short while until the actual stamps can be printed. Unfortunately, I do not have the stamp to match the overprint.

Udmurtia

The Republic of Bashkortostan lies in the South Ural Mountains bordering with Tatarstan and the Udmurt Republic. In 1921 Bashkortostan was forced to become an official Autonomous Soviet Republic as a part of the Russian Federation. By 1937 Bashkortostan accepted the constitution of the USSR, in which the republic was declared a state. This status was a formality due to the absence of sovereign rights. In 1990, upon the collapse of the Soviet Union, Bashkortostan declared its state sovereignty. Its capital city is Ufa and the economy depends on agriculture, stockbreeding and some industry.

The economy in Russia since the break up of the Soviet Union has such high inflation that stamps that were previously issued are not of enough value to mail a letter any more, so to remedy the situation, the local Post Offices have taken blocks of five "old" printed stamps and overprinted them with a new image and a new value. Dogge de Bordeaux stamp from Batum

Another new issue is this impressive Dogue de Bordeaux from Batum issued in 2000. Batum is one of the new local Russian states that is issuing local stamps. This is a lovely example of this topical interest. I don't have any other background on it, unfortunately.
Batum is a local Russian state just south of the Black Sea, near Turkey. It is a Black Sea oil port at the end of an oil line. In 1878 its turbulent modern history began when it was taken by Russia from Turkey. Following the fall of the Tsar, the caucasion peoples reasserted their independence and Turkey saw its chance to win back old territory. Its troops entered Batum in april 1918. From this time date letters handstamped Batumskaya Kontora during a shortage of stamps at the Post Office and thus begins Batums philatelic history.

Mastiff stamp from Buriatia

Buriatia is another of those new Russian states that has issued new dog stamps within the last few years, 1997 in this case. I think that it is the only brindle that we have on a modern stamp.
Buriatia is in southern Siberia near Lake Baykal on the Mongolian border and such the Buryat people are Buddhists as well. The collapse of the Soviet Union has created a gold mine for stamp collectors. The local governments have issued some wonderful stamps in an effort to sell them to the world market and not even have to provide the associated service of mailing letters with them. This is a real boon when you see such lovely examples as this stamp put out by Buriatia in 1997.

Mastiff stamp from China

This beautiful stamp was put out by The Republic of China (Taiwan) in 1972. It came in a very expensive set with four greyhounds and five Salukis and this one Tibetan Mastiff! The title of this Shih-ning painting shown on the stamp is "Heaven Lion". The copy that I have is mounted with gold leaf in a beautiful frame and is priced at $24.95. There is no question that this should be the center of any Tibetian Mastiff collection.

This stamp from Chuvashia was issued in 2000.
Chuvashia borders both of Russia’s European and Asian regions along one of the major tributaries of the Volga River. Chuvashia’s hops production and the locals’ love of beer has earned the republic the nickname of "Russia’s Bavaria." Chuvash people are Turkish; strangely they are not Muslim but Christian orthodox.

The above stamps from Dagestan were issued in 2001.
Dagestan is one of the republics of the former USSR. Located between the Caspian Sea on the East and Caucasus mountains on the West, it is probably one of the most attractive places in that part of the globe. Its area is close to that of Scotland. With population of just above 2 million people, Dagestan is the homeland to over 36 different nationalities, and each one of those nationalities has its own unique language. Such combination of languages, cultures, types of landscape and customs makes it a one of a kind place in the world. These days, however, Dagestan is going through the times of heavy unrest, both political and ethnical.

Mastiff stamp from Grenada

Grenada and the Grenadines issued a wonderful set of dogs stamps in 1995 that matched each breed with a symbol from their country of origin. This is the only one that baffles me, since I am not sure why they show the Mastiff with the Great Sphinx from Egypt. It is still a nicely done stamp.
Grenada is described as a spice island, since it produces large quantities of cloves and mace and about a third of the world’s nutmeg. It also grows cacao, sugar, bananas and a wide variety of other fruit and vegetables. Some of its beaches, specially Grand Anse, a dazzling two-mile stretch of white sand, are very fine, but the rest of the island is just as beautiful, rising from a generally rugged coast to a spectacular mountainous interior. The island is green, well forested and cultivated and is blessed with plenty of rain in the wet season. Grenada is the most southerly of the Windward Islands. In contrast to other Windward Islands which have had a similar history of disputed ownership between the French and English, the French cultural influence in Grenada has completely died out. The population is very young; 38% are under 15 years old and nearly 26% are in the 15-29 years’ age bracket. Grenada has two dependencies in the Grenadines chain, Carriacou and Petit (often spelt Petite) Martinique.

Mastiff stamp from Karakalpakia

This stamp from Karakalpakia was issued in 1998.
Karakalpakia, now under the domain of Uzbekistan, is on the edge of the shrinking Aral Sea, which has recently revealed a shocking scale of environmentally induced disease. Women and children are most severely affected from the spread of pesticides and other pollutants as the lake - once the fourth largest in the world - has turned into a desert, its waters siphoned off to irrigate vast cotton fields and rice paddies in Central Asia. Over 20 per cent of the young women, aged 13-19, have kidney disease, and another 23 per cent suffer from thyroid dysfunctions. And many women have high levels of lead, zinc and strontium in their blood. Although the Aral Sea probably has less than 10 years of life left, if nothing is done to salvage what remains of it, the 1.1 million residents of Karakalpakia are under immediate health threats. If nothing is done to improve the health of the people we may be witnessing the end of another entire society as a result of human folly.

The Netherland Antilles is a group of islands in the Caribbean. Once the center of the Caribbean slave trade, the island of Curacao was hard hit by the abolition of slavery in 1863. Its prosperity (and that of neighboring Aruba) was restored in the early 20th century with the construction of oil refineries to service the newly discovered Venezuelan oil fields. The island of Saint Maarten is shared with France; its northern portion is named Saint Martin and is part of Guadeloupe. This stamp was issued by the Netherlands-Antilles in 1995.

Mastiff stamp from Russia Mastiff stamp from Russia Mastiff stamp from Russia

Three new beautiful stamps from Russia.
Russia or Russian Federation, independent republic in eastern Europe and northern Asia, the worlds largest country by area. Russia was once the largest and the most prominent republic of the Union of Soviet socialisst Republics(USSR, or Soviet Union). In 1991 the USSR broke apart and Russia became an independent country. In general, Russia's climate is similar to that of Canada. Like Canada, although colder and with greater temperature extremes in many places, most of Russia has a harsh continental climate. although climate, and to some dgree soils, limit the country's agricultural wealth. mineral wealth is considerable. Russia's mineral resources are unmatched by any other country. The capital and largest city is Moscow. Russia constitutes more than one-ninth of the world's land area and nearly twice the area of United States or china. Russia is the sixth most populous country, after China, India, the United States, Indonesia, and Brazil. The wealthy, known as the New Rich or New Russians, since 1991, often live quite extravagantly. However, approximately a quarter of the population live in poverty and another 25 to 30 percent earn only slightly more than poverty wages. Many of the elderly, mostly women on fixed incomes, are poor.

Sakhalin is a very long but narrow island located between Japan and Russian Maritime Territory. It is separated from the continent by a narrow strait of 6 km width and for that reason, Westerners first thought it should be a peninsula. With the Kuril Islands, Sakhalin is one of the territories disputed between Japan and Russia and its belonging has not yet been definitely settled. In 1997, the local government started issuing stamps.

Mastiff stamp from Tadjikistan

This stamp was issued in 1999.
Tadjikistan plays a fascinating role in the power struggle in central Asia. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the declaration of independence by the former Soviet republics, Tadjikistan acquired national sovereignty for the first time in history. Inexperience, in conjunction with a particular clan-oriented, regional-based, political culture established the foundation for the prolonged conflict that ensued in post-Soviet Tadjikistan. The intensity of this conflict has been further fueled by the ethnic and historical externalities of the unresolved political situation in Afghanistan. Today, Russia's interests in Tadjikistan center around preserving its economic and geopolitical position in Central Asia. These interests, however, conflict with those of the newly independent states in the region, which are focused on preventing Tadjikistan from becoming a "Russian protectorate." In this respect, resolution of the civil war in Tadjikistan is part of the broader problems of reconstituting global spheres of influence and establishing a "new world order" in the wake of the Soviet collapse.
In addition to the seemingly obvious military, strategic, and geopolitical factors, there are critical economic issues that underlie Russia's interests in retaining Tadjikistan within its sphere of influence. Tadjikistan is a mountainous country, rich in fuel and mineral deposits. Tadjikistan's potential to generate hydroelectric power is second only to Russia among CIS member states. Moreover, not so long ago, Tadjikistan was Moscow's main supplier of several minerals, as well as cotton. Finally, the country has the resources and infrastructure to become a major industrial power in the region.
This country is worth studying on its own and now it has issued some of the nicest stamps available from any country including this Mastiff that was put out in 1999.

Mastiff stamp from Touva

Touva (often spelled Tuva) is a country in the southern area of Siberia. It's a unique place with the landscapes ranging from the desert to the permafrost, and local fauna-from camels to reindeers. Touva is known as almost the only place in the world where shamanism, a very ancient religion, is preserved, kept and cultivated in its original form.
The Republic of Touva lies at the upper reaches of the Siberian Yenisey River and forms a barrier between Russia and Mongolia. Since its independence from the former Soviet Union, Tuva continues to struggle to work on the appropriate way to safeguard and develop its own identity and sovereignty going through the difficult changes from a command-orientated planned economy towards an open market economy. Like so many other former Russian states, the diversity of the people is starting to be felt as the original culture, traditions and religion are gaining more followers.

This beautiful stamp was issued by Udmurtia in 1998. Udmurtia is approximately midway between Moscow to the Urals. Its land is a hilly wooden plain with numerous swamps, springs and rivers. Its climate is a bit too wet and not healthy. Summer is short, rainy and cool; autumn is very cloudy (often there are almost no sunny days from October till January), foggy and rainy. This not very friendly land was originally inhabited by Udmurts (or Votyaks). These peaceful and quiet Finnish people maintained their culture heritage there at least for five thousand years. Their religion is also ancient. They worship the God (called Inmar, The Highest Being) and His assistants governing various elements. With the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Udmurtia became one of the local republics and as such they now issue stamps including this lovely Mastiff.

Mastiff stamp from Kuril Islands

This lovely set of stamps from the Kuril Islands was issued in 1999. The Kuril Islands are a chain of 56 large and small volcanic islands in far eastern Russia, extending from northeastern Hokkaido Island in Japan to southern Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia. The Kurils are heavily forested and contain many active volcanoes. Both the Russians and Japanese settled the Kurils in the 18th century. In 1875 Japan ceded to Russia the nearby island of Sakhalin in exchange for full Japanese possession of the Kurils. The islands were returned to the USSR by an agreement reached at the Yalta Conference during World War II (1939-1945). After the war Japan maintained a claim to the southernmost islands, and the territorial dispute prohibited the countries from signing a peace treaty. That dispute has not been settled to this day.

Mastiff stamp from
Venda
Mastiff stamp from
Venda Venda is a part of South Africa. Under acts of the South African Parliament, land ws set aside for blacks in psudeoindependent territories (originally called "Bantustans"), allegedly to allow black self- government and cultural preservation. Venda was designated for Venda-speaking people. In reality the homelands allowed the white government to control blacks and exclude them from the political process. In 1973, Venda was granted "self-government," and in 1979 it became the third homeland to be granted "independence" from south Africa. As an independent state, all residents of Venda were treated as foreignors in the remainder of South Africa. The UN Security Council condemned the homelands policy as an attempt by the white government to further apartheid and Venda was not recognized internationally as an independent state. Venda was reabsorbed into South Africa in 1994.

Mastiff stamp from
Tadjikistan

Mastiff stamp from
Tadjikistan Tadjikistan plays a fascinating role in the power struggle in central Asia.
This country is worth studying on its own and now it has issued some of the nicest stamps available from any country.
This is probably one of the most amazing mini sheets ever produced. There are eighteen breeds represented and they have managed to run a perforation line through all but one. My, what an accomplishment. The Mastiff is shown enlarged to the right.

We also have a wonderful set of 16 different Mastiff and Bull Mastiff cards from England. If somebody is serious, I would be happy to send the scans, but don't have time to post them to the page right this minute.

* We can take visa/mc/disc or paypal, but they are first come first served, so let me know if you are interested.

* Truly one of the cheapest unique treats for yourself or a friend (great for club trophies as well!)

* It is absolutely true that you will often find some of these stamps at very reasonable prices -- some can be had for under a dollar. On the other hand, if you add in the gas, hours, and hassles that it has taken to find them, you may find it easier to just get them from us while we have them :*) I don't always count on getting more in the near future. I get them when I can find them and the stock is not always constant.

* I do have other breeds available. Let me know and perhaps I can do a page for your breed.
