A lovely stamp of the Maltese Terrier put out by Adjaria in 1999.
Adjaria is an Autonomous Republic within Georgia, of the former Soviet Union. It is one of the most beautiful parts, situated to the southwest of the Georgian Republic.

A new issue from Ajman put out in 2001.
Ajman is the smallest of the United Arab Emirates. It is immediately to the north of and mostly surrounded by Sharjah. Like most of the country, Ajman is in the process of changes which amount to a transformation. The central area is rapidly being modernized and it is clear that Ajman has no intention of being left behind the other Emirates. It is here that the Victory speedboats are built and Ajman is determined to enjoy a share of the United Arab Emirates' victories for itself.

Another new issue, this time from Dagestan.
This beautiful stamp was recently issued by Dagestan in the Soviet Union. The break up of the Soviet Union has created a gold mine for collectors of topical stamps since one way to produce income is to sell stamps that people save rather than mail letters with them. This is one of the nicer examples of this activity. It is not hard to find right now, but I don't know how long they will be available.

Dagestan also produced this gorgeous stamp in 1999. It has to rank as one of the top items available in any breed.
The economy in Russia since the break up of the Soviet Union has such high inflation that stamps that were previously issued are not of enough value to mail a letter any more, so to remedy the situation, the local Post Offices have taken blocks of five "old" printed stamps and overprinted them with a new image and a new value. (see detail to the right) The Maltese Terrier shown above on the right is one of these "Russian Overprints" from Udmurtia. These stamps come in a set of five different colored stamps all with the same overprint. Last time that I got in some overprints, I assumed that they would remain available. I was wrong and I never saw more copies of those. I expect these to be equally as rare and collectable. There is no telling how many of the overprints they produced (not many), since they were never designed to be sold on the world market. They are of value only for a short while until the actual stamps can be printed. Udmurtia obviously used the Maltese portrait that was later issued above on the left as a regular stamp.

As far as I can tell, there are three or four islands off the coast of Scotland that receive their major income from issuing stamps for collectors. This stamp is from the island of Davaar and was issued in 1984. It can be used to mail a letter to the mainland, but cannot be used in Scotland itself.

This 'happy' Maltese puppy stamp was issued by Kalmykia in 2001.
Kalmykia is a republic within the Russian Federation. The Kalmyks settled the Volga River region in the seventeenth century. A Mongol people, they were originally Buddhist in faith. Annexed to Russian in 1771, a Kalmyk Autonomous Province was created by the Bolsheviks in 1920. This was abolished during the Second World War, when, in common with many other ethnic minorities, the Kalmyks were deemed to have displayed insufficient enthusiasm for fighting for Communism. The customary mass deportations followed. An Autonomous Republic was re-established in 1958.

Karakalpakia, now under the domain of Uzbekistan, is on the edge of the shrinking Aral Sea, which has recently revealed a shocking scale of environmentally induced disease. Women and children are most severely affected from the spread of pesticides and other pollutants as the lake - once the fourth largest in the world - has turned into a desert, its waters siphoned off to irrigate vast cotton fields and rice paddies in Central Asia. Over 20 per cent of the young women, aged 13-19, have kidney disease, and another 23 per cent suffer from thyroid dysfunctions. And many women have high levels of lead, zinc and strontium in their blood. Although the Aral Sea probably has less than 10 years of life left, if nothing is done to salvage what remains of it, the 1.1 million residents of Karakalpakia are under immediate health threats. If nothing is done to improve the health of the people we may be witnessing the end of another entire society as a result of human folly. This stamp was issued in 1999.

The Komi Republic is situated in the extreme North-East part of Russia. The Komi Republic is now a democratic legal state included into the Russian Federation. The republic has unique stocks of mineral resources thanks to their location, diversity and quality. The mineral resources of Komi Republic are represented by combustible minerals, oil and gas, metal ores, minerals and balneological resources.

This stamp was issued in 2002.

It is often very difficult to acquire stamps from North Korea because the US government has an embargo against that country. Therefore, most of the Korean stamps that we have managed to find come in with collections from third countries like Canada. This puppy was issued in 1990.

This pair is also from North Korea. It came in a set of four stamps; the other two have a Japanese Chin and a Pomeranian. This series was considered Korean Jewel Paintings of the different seasons. These two are the summer and autumn stamps from the series. The other two stamps are available too and the entire series makes a wonderful framed set.

Para Timor produced this lovely body pose and headstudy in 2000.
East Timor is an area of Indonesia that recently voted to become independent. There is much unrest still since the current government does not want to give up power.

This stamp was done in 1968 by Poland. I can't believe that that is 34 years ago! The dog is listed as a Maltanczyk and the artist is probably J. Grabianski who has done a number of dog portraits for different country stamps.
Poland is located in Central Europe, east of Germany and is slightly smaller than New Mexico. Climate is temperate with cold, windy, cloudy, moderately severe winters with frequent precipitation; mild summers with frequent showers and thunderstorms. The terrain is mostly flat plain; mountains along the southern border; Natural resources consist of coal, sulphur, copper, natural gas, silver, lead, salt, and arable land. Natural hazard of the area is flooding. The situation has improved since 1989 due to decline in heavy industry and increased environmental concern by postcommunist governments. Historically, an area of conflict because of flat terrain and the lack of natural barriers on the North European Plain.

What a perfect pair. This wonderful Maltese Terrier stamp was put out in 1999.
Sakhalin is a very long but narrow island located between Japan and Russian Maritime Territory. It is separated from the continent by a narrow strait of 6 km width and for that reason, Westerners first thought it should be a peninsula. With the Kuril Islands, Sakhalin is one of the territories disputed between Japan and Russia and its belonging has not yet been definitely settled. In 1997, the local government started issuing stamps.

This lovely stamp is from the United Arab Emirate of Sharjah. It is rather old as well, having been issued in 1972. Even though it is 30 years old, it is quite attractive and would be the center of any Maltese collection.
Sharjah is the third largest of the seven states, which forms the United Arab Emirates that became fully independent in 1971. From that time, it has attracted attention -- first because of its oil reserves and its strategic location but now in addition to those, because of its program of economic and social development. In the last quarter of the twentieth century, the UAE has witnessed the creation of a truly modern welfare state. Education, health care and social services are available to all citizens.

This stamp was issued in 2000 by Turkmenistan>
Annexed by Russia between 1865 and 1885, Turkmenistan became a Soviet republic in 1925. It achieved its independence upon the dissolution of the USSR in 1991. President NIYAZOV retains absolute control over the country and opposition is not tolerated. Extensive Hudrocarbon/natural gas reserves could prove a boon to this underdeveloped country if extraction and delivery projects were to be expanded. Turkmenistan is on the east side of the Caspian Sea, just above Iran. It is slightly larger than California in size. Its terrain is flat-to-rolling sandy desert with dunes rising to mountains in the south; low mountains along border with Iran; borders Caspian Sea in west. The religion is Muslim 89%, Eastern Orthodox 9%, unknown 2%. The capital is Ashgabsat.

This attractive stamp was issued by Venda in 1994. The artwork is apparently done by Denis C. Murphy. Since it is fairly recent issue, it should be reasonably easy to find, but is from a relatively expensive set.
Venda is a part of South Africa. Under acts of the South African Parliament, land was set aside for blacks in psudeoindependent territories (originally called "Bantustans"), allegedly to allow black self- government and cultural preservation. Venda was designated for Venda-speaking people. In reality the homelands allowed the white government to control blacks and exclude them from the political process. In 1973, Venda was granted "self-government," and in 1979 it became the third homeland to be granted "independence" from south Africa. As an independent state, all residents of Venda were treated as foreignors in the remainder of South Africa. The UN Security Council condemned the homelands policy as an attempt by the white government to further apartheid and Venda was not recognized internationally as an independent state. Venda was reabsorbed into South Africa in 1994.

This wonderful Maltese portrait was done in 1994. The artist appears to be M. Kalezic and all of the stamps in the set were done by the same artist. Since it a fairly recent issue, it should remain available for some time.
Yugoslavia is located in southeastern Europe on the Balkan Peninsula. From 1945 to 1991 Yugoslavia was a larger Communist federal state, consisting of six republics. Four of the republics—Bosnia and Herzegovina (often referred to simply as Bosnia), Croatia, Macedonia, and Slovenia—declared their independence in 1991 and 1992, leaving only Serbia and Montenegro unified. They declared themselves the inheritors of the country name of Yugoslavia.

Maltese Souvenir Sheets


This incredible Maltese puppy souvenir sheet was put out by Cuba in 1992. It was issued to commemorate the FCC or Cuban Dog Club. Because the US has an embargo against Cuba, the only Cuban stamps that come into this country are usually part of a larger collection that is purchased in another country, such as Canada. It is truly a work of art and would be unique to the collection of whoever is lucky enough to adopt it.

Maltese Envelopes


This lovely envelope is a 'First Day of Issue' by the Philatelic Society commemorating "Dogs". The envelope was issued by Malta in 2001. There are four wonderful stamps affixed to the front of the envelope. I don't have any information on why these particular dogs were chosen. However, if you have an interest in collecting stamps for one of these breeds, this is your chance to acquire this awesome envelope and the stamp for the price of the envelope alone. I have only ONE envelope.
Great Britain formally acquired possession of Malta in 1814. The island staunchly supported the UK through both World Wars and remained in the Commonwealth when it became independent in 1964. A decade later Malta became a republic. Over the last 15 years, the island has become a major freight transshipment point, financial center, and tourist destination. It is an official candidate for EU membership. Malta is located in Southern Europe, islands in the Mediteranean Sea, south of Sicily(Italy). The climaate: Mediterranean with mild, rainy winters and hot, dry summers. Ethnic groups: Maltese (descendants of anciet Carthaginians and Phoenicians, with strong elements of Italian and other Mediterranean stock) The religion is Roman Catholic 91%. The Capital is Valletta.
