Irish Wolfhound stamp from Scotland Irish Wolfhound stamp from Batum

I find these two new stamps particularly interesting because they are obviously taken from the same art work. The one on the left is from the Berneria Islands of Scotland. The one on the right is from Batum, a new Russian state. Neither of them credits the artist. The Scottish stamp is much more expensive to obtain even though they were just issued this last year.
Bernera is in the Western Isles of Scotland. It has a population of about 300 that is sustained mostly by lobster fishing. Stamps issued by the islands off the edge of Scotland are typically used to post mail from the island to the mainland of Scotland. You cannot mail letters back to the island with them, mail outside of Scotland, or mail within Scotland itself. Issuing unique stamps is a source of income for many of the Scottish islands.
Batum is a local Russian state just south of the Black Sea, near Turkey. It is a Black Sea oil port at the end of an oil line. In 1878 its turbulent modern history began when it was taken by Russia from Turkey. Following the fall of the Tsar, the caucasion peoples reasserted their independence and Turkey saw its chance to win back old territory. Its troops entered Batum in april 1918. From this time date letters handstamped Batumskaya Kontora during a shortage of stamps at the Post Office and thus begins Batums philatelic history.

Irish Wolfhound stamp from Buriatia

Buriatia is in southern Siberia near Lake Baykal on the Mongolian border and such the Buryat people are Buddhists as well.
The collapse of the Soviet Union has created a gold mine for stamp collectors. The local governments have issued some wonderful stamps in an effort to sell them to the world market and not even have to provide the associated service of mailing letters with them. This is a real boon when you see such lovely examples as this stamp put out by Buriatia in 2001.

Irish Wolfhound stamp from Czechoslavakia

This is one of the older stamps that had an Irish Wolfhound on it. It was issued by Czechoslavakia in 1965, over 36 years ago. In addition to the Afghan Hound and the Greyhound, it lists the Irsky Vlkovad. They are becoming harder to get. probably because they are collected by fanciers from all three breeds.
The Czech Republic is a landlocked republic in Central Europe, comprising the historic regions of Bohemia and Moravia and Silesia. The new state a democratic republic known as Czechoslovakia was broken up during World War II, but was re-established at the end of the war in 1945. From 1948 to 1989 the republic was ruled by a communist regime. In November 1989 the Communist government was ousted and Czechoslovakia again became a democratic state. During the 1990s, political and economic conflicts developed between the Czechs and Slovaks, and leaders of both groups decided to dissolve the Republic. In January 1993 Czechoslovakia was replaced by two independent states, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The Czech Republic has relatively few natural resources and is heavily dependent on imported energy and raw materials. It has a humid, continental climate with cold winters and warm summers. Prague is the Capital and largest city of the Czech Republic. The official language is Czech, a language of the West Slavic subgroup of slavic languages. The principle religion is Christianity. About 40% Roman Catholic. Protestant 3% and about 5% are atheist. Prior to World War II the country had a large Jewish population. Most of the Jews died in the Holocaust, the Nazi campaign to exterminate the Jews of Europe. Pork is a staple in their diet which resembes that of Germany. Traditionally the Czech lands have been among the most economically developed regions of Europe.

Irish Wolfhound stamp from Daqestan

This novel stamp from Dagestan was issued in 2000.
Dagestan is one of the republics of the former USSR. Located between the Caspian Sea on the East and Caucasus mountains on the West, it is probably one of the most attractive places in that part of the globe. Its area is close to that of Scotland. With population of just above 2 million people, Dagestan is the homeland to over 36 different nationalities, and each one of those nationalities has its own unique language. Such combination of languages, cultures, types of landscape and customs makes it a one of a kind place in the world. These days, however, Dagestan is going through the times of heavy unrest, both political and ethnic.

Irish Wolfhound stamp from Dhufar

Dhufar is one of the United Arab Emirates. There is some question in my mind whether this is actually a Scottish Deerhound, but the country, and most stamp books therefore, classifiy it as an IW. Either way, it is quite attractive. It was issued in 1984.

Irish Wolfhound stamp from Hungary

This stamp is listed as an "Irischer Wolf Hound" and is part of a set that included a Whippet, an Italian Greyhound, and an Afghan Hound among others. The stamp is quite unique, especially considering the background and colors.

Irish Wolfhound stamp from Kalmykia

Kalmykia issued this lovely quartet in 2001.
Kalmykia is a republic within the Russian Federation. The Kalmyks settled the Volga River region in the seventeenth century. A Mongol people, they were originally Buddhist in faith. Annexed to Russian in 1771, a Kalmyk Autonomous Province was created by the Bolsheviks in 1920. This was abolished during the Second World War, when, in common with many other ethnic minorities, the Kalmyks were deemed to have displayed insufficient enthusiasm for fighting for Communism. The customary mass deportations followed. An Autonomous Republic was re-established in 1958.

Irish Wolfhound stamp from Yakutia Irish Wolfhound stamp from Karelia

The economy in Russia since the break up of the Soviet Union has such high inflation, stamps that were previously issued are not of enough value to mail a letter any more, so to remedy the situation, the local Post Offices have taken blocks of four "old" printed stamps and overprinted them with a new image and a new value. The Irish Wolfhound shown above on the left is one of these "Russian Overprints" from Yakutia.
Most people know Yakutia from the game of Risk along with Kamchatka and Irikutz. Actually, Yakutia is the largest region in Siberia, known as Sasha-Yakutia. These stamps come in a set of five different colored stamps all with the same overprint. Last time that I got in some overprints, I assumed that they would remain available. I was wrong and I never saw more copies of those. I expect these to be equally as rare and collectable. There is no telling how many of the overprints they produced (not many), since they were never designed to be sold on the world market. They are of value only for a short while until the actual stamps can be printed. On the right is the stamp that was ultimately issued with the Irish Wolfhound image from the overprint, put out by Karelia in 1990.
The Republic of Karelia is a remarkably beautiful land of white nights, boundless forests, and blue lakes. It is located on the border of Western and Eastern Europe, on the border of cultures and religions. Severe beauty of its nature, the climate, not too favourable in these latitudes, the coexistence and intermingling of various peoples inhabiting this land for centuries all that cnditioned the character of the people living here: very laconic, self-assured, contemplative, and tolerant people. It also accounts for the fact that there is no national strife and terrorism in this land.

Irish Wolfhound stamp from Karelia

This stamp was put out in 2001.
Karjala and Karelia are one and the same country. It is an autonomous republic within Russia with 800,00 inhabitants, only 11.1% are Karelian. Russians are the vast majority. About 90,00 people speak Karelian (Uralic language close to Finnish) out of an ethnic group out of 145,00 in Russia. The Republic of Karelia is a remarkably beautiful land of white nights, boundless forests, and blue lakes. It is located on the border of Western and Eastern Europe, on the border of cultures and religions. Irish Wolfhound stamp from Sakhalin

Another lovely new stamp, this time from Sakhalin issued in 2002.
Sakhalin is a very long but narrow island located between Japan and Russian Maritime Territory. It is separated from the continent by a narrow strait of 6 km width and for that reason, Westerners first thought it should be a peninsula. With the Kuril Islands, Sakhalin is one of the territories disputed between Japan and Russia and its belonging has not yet been definitely settled. In 1997, the local government started issuing stamps.

Irish Wolfhound stamp from Sahara

In 1976 the Saharawi people declared their independence from Spanish rule and set up the Republic of Saharawi for self-determination. It has been a very rocky road since then. This stamp is from my favorite set issued by The Sahara Republic in 1996. All of the stamps showing very attractive Sighthounds. The Irish Wolfhound is listed as a Lobero Irlandes. I thought that these sets would remain easily available, but I seem to have a terrible time getting them.

Irish Wolfhound stamp from St. Vincent

This stamp was issued by St. Vincent and the Grenadines in the Caribbean. It was put out to commemorate the Year of the Dog in 1994. It is attractive and not hard to find but from an expensive set.
Caribs were the first inhabitants of St. Vincent. Columbus marked the presence of the island on his third voyage in 1498, but didn't go ashore. The Caribs were tenacious, keeping the European conquistadors at bay longer than on any other island.
In 1787, Captain William Bligh set sail from England on the Bounty, bound for Tahiti. The purpose of the voyage, which ended in mutiny, was to collect breadfruit plants and transport them to St. Vincent for use as food for slaves. In 1793 Bligh eventually arrived in St. Vincent on another ship loaded with breadfruit seedlings. The fruit would make the island famous. To this day, bananas are the main export from the island.
St. Vincent and the Grenadines achieved independence in 1979. The islands have produced many stamps over the years, including this Irish Wolfhound from 1994.

Irish Wolfhound stamp from Tanzania

Tanzania, the largest country in East Africa, is renowned for its magnificent wildlife, lakes, mountains, and scenery. The country boasts a wealth of natural attractions, including the famed Ngorongoro crater and the formidable Mount Kilimanjaro. It is also home to magnificent game reserves: Gombe Stream National Park, with its chimpanzee sanctuary; and the breathtaking plains of the Serengeti National Park, which hosts the annual migration of at least two million wildebeest with leopards and lions hot on their heels. Add to this the lovely beaches of the exotic islands of Zanzibar, Pemba, and Mafia. Tanzania recently issued a couple different sets of dog stamps, including this headstudy from 1994. Although this is not my favorite it is important to complete a collection.

Irish Wolfhound stamp from Benin Present day Benin was the site of Dahomey, a prominant West African kingdom that rose in the 15th century. The territory became a French Colony in 1872 and achieved independence on Autust 1, 1960, as the Republic of Benin. A succession of military Governments ended in 1972 with the rise to powere of Mathieu KEREKOU and the establishment of a government based on Marxist-Leninist principles. A move to representative government began in 1989. Two years later, free elections ushered in former Prime Minister Nicephor SOGLO as presdent, marking the first successful transfer of power in Africa from a dictatorship to a democracy. KEREKOU was returned to power by elections held in 1996 and 2001, though some irregularities were alleged.

Irish Wolfhound Mini Sheet from Guinee

Guinea is partial heir to the series of west African empires that, at their height before the arrival of the Europeans, cast significant political and commercial influence over many peoples from Guinea's Atlantic coast to the southern edge of the Sahara. The empires of Ghana, Mali, and Songhai spanned the period from about the 10th to the 15th centuries. French military penetration into the area began in the mid-19th century.
