These adorable puppies are from a set of cards originally intended for issue by
W.D. & H.O. Wills in 1940. It is called "Puppies by Lucy Dawson". Although the
originals were never issued, Imperial Publishing has produced an officially
authorized reproduction. On the back, it says, "These two little bundles of
fur with their shaded grey coats were so attractive that I wanted to hug them,
but that wasn't their idea. They were far too lively to be satisfied with such
treatment, and wanted to try their new teeth on anything and everything. It
was only with difficulty that they were persuaded not to eat their portrait!"

of the oldest of Scandinavian races. It is a reliable
ELK, or bear-hunter, and is becoming quite fashionable

done by artist Arthur Wardle.
The back of the card says, "The Elkhound is a native of Norway and Sweden and is used for hunting elk and deer. He has latterly come to the front in this country as a show dog and companion, and good entries have been seen at the principal Shows. By reason of his
great intelligence and docility, he is quick to learn and can be taught to do
almost anything. Colours: grey of various shades, with black ends to the
longer covering hair; light grey, wolf grey, elk grey and brownish-grey.
Whole black, brown or white, or grey with definite black markings are

called Scenic Backgrounds. On the back, it says, "Elkhounds. The elkhound, in
his native Norway, is used for hunting the elk and deer, and is often used for
hunting the bear and smaller beasts of prey. He possesses a long, pointed nose,
prick ears, curled tail, and the dense fur-like coat peculiar to all the dogs
of the extreme Northern latitudes. He has latterly come to the front as a show
dog and companion in this country, a Club - The British Elkhound Society -
having been formed to further his interests. Colour grey sable. Weight about
65 lbs. Height 22 ins."

This card was intended to be issued by John Player & Sons in about 1940,
however a paper shortage due to the outbreak of World War II prevented this.
Fortunately, a number of the cards were printed and made available to
collectors. The cards were intended to be inserted singly into packets of 10
cigarettes. The title of the set is: "Dogs' Heads: A series from Paintings by
Peter Biegel". On the back, it says, "As one would expect of a native of
Scandinavia, the Elkhound is abundantly coated and extremely hardy. Research
has revealed that is has been bred as a hunting companion for man for thousands
of years. It is fearless and resourceful, and is trained to track and hold at
bay such fierce animals as the elk, reindeer and bear. Its long association
with man has made it an even-tempered and faithful companion, without becoming
in the least servile. The Elkhound belongs to the Spitz group of dogs, which
includes among others the Husky and the Keeshond."

This cigarette card is from the Carreras Company that made "Turf" Cigarettes.
It was issued in 1952 in a series of 50 cards titled "Famous Dog Breeds". There is nothing written on the back
as the picture was printed on the packaging and had to be cut
out for saving. It is rather crude compared to some of the other
cards. They are quite rare, however, making them very difficult
to find again.

This cigarette card was issued by John Player & Sons in 1929 and is from a
painting by Arthur Wardle. The back of the card says, "This dog is a native of
Norway and Sweden, where he was used in hunting the elk and is still
occasionally so employed, though restrictions are now placed on elk hunting.
The Elkhound was introduced into Britain late in the 19th century and has
gradually increased in popularity. He has a thick crisp coat, with woolly
undercoat, tightly curled tail and erect pointed ears: his whole appearance
being characterized by alertness and energy. The colours preferred are grey
of various shades with black ends to longer hair, and light legs, chest and
underparts.

This gorgeous cigarette card was issued by Gallaher, Ltd. in their second
Series in 1938. The back of the card says, "The Elkhound, a very old breed,
originally came from Norway and is a hardy animal. As its name implies, it was
used primarily to hunt the elk. It is fearless and its eyesight is remarkable,
while its powers of scent are very highly developed. It has a heavy coat, like
other breeds which originated in the cold regions, but is, nevertheless,
tireless. An attractive animal whose colour ranges from silvery white to dark
grey, it has been popular in England for many years, but it is far from
common."

Godfrey Phillips produced this lovely puppy(artist unknown)
under the title of OUR PUPPIES in 1936. The following is shown on
the back of the card: "Used to track the Elk in Norway, the Elkhound
is a strong, hardy dog--reliable and intelligent. Usually
kept as a companion and show dog."
Norwegian Elkhound Card 16(Godfrey Phillips Our Puppies, 1936)... $12.95 each
This rare cigarette card was issued by Hignett's Cigarettes in 1936. I have
only seen one set of these over the years. On the back it says, "The Elkhound
is Norwegian in origin, and became popular here after the War. Like all dogs
from the North it has a fur-like coat, prick ears and curled tail. In its
native country it is used to track and bay the Elk, in bear-hunting, and in
the shooting of birds. The breed is rightly popular, for Elkhounds are even-
tempered, intelligent and admirable guards. One of its earliest devotees was
Lady Kitty Vincent, now Lady Kitty Ritson."
Norwegian Elkhound Card 17(Hignett cigarettes, 1936)... $19.95 each
Elkhound Playing Cards
Sorry, we don't have any complete sets of playing cards. These were
from collections of antique cards and there is no way of knowing how
old they are or where one might find more of them. They are certainly
a part of Norwegian Elkhound history.
