This lovely photograph was produced by Service Line Company in Modena, Italy in 1993. The subjects are not identified. The only writing on the back of the card is the name of the company and the title of the series "Dogs & Cats".

This is a tea card issued by Barbers Tea in 1961. The following is printed on the back of the card: "Named after Louis Dobermann of Apolds, Thuringia the breed was probably created by crossing the Pinscher, Wermaraner Pointer, and the Vorstehund. The breed was saved from extinetion by Otto Goller in 1910. The dog is used by the American F.B.I. as a "G-Dog" and is becoming increasingly popular in Britain today. Coat is short and harsh, head clean-cut, ears cropped on the continent, but in Britain preferably erect. Weight of the animal is 60-65 lbs."

This is also a tea card card issued by Hornimans Tea in 1961. This is an actual photograph by C.M. Cooke in the series titled simply "Dogs" and enclosed in all 1/4 packets of Hornimans tea. The following appears on the back of the card: "The only known breed that is the work of one man, a dog-catcher named Louis Dobermann from Apolda in Germany. He used some traditional German breeds such as Rottwielers, Pinscher, short-haired shepherd-dogs, etc., to create a police dog. Of medium size, both muscular and elegant. Tail docked fairly short. Coat short and harsh, colour usually black with red markings above eye, on muzzle, chest legs and feet."

Golden Fleece Australia "Pedigree Dogs" were issued in 1972. The Doberman is No. 3 in the series of 36 cards. Shown on the back: "The Doberman was developed in Germany by using various breeds such as the old type German Shepherd Dog. The breed came to Australia in 1952 andbeing alert and clever the Doberman has been successfully used as a police dog, a seeing-eye dog for the blind people, and a war dog. He is really a home-loving animal, with a high instinct of family ownership.

Natonal Geographic World issued these cards titled Dog Series No. 12 in 1970. Shown on the back of the card: "Doberman pinschers were bred in Germany in the late 1800's. Strong,fearless, and easily trained, Yhey have served as watchdogs, police dogs, guide dogs for the blind, and attack dogs Over the years the bred has lost much of its original fierceness. But it remains a one-master dog-and it isoften not very friendly to strangers.

Premiere trading cards were made for use in vending machines manufactured exclusively by the Oak Manufacturing Company, Inc., Culver City, California in 1950. The printing as shown on the back of the card follows: "Originated in Apolda, Germany, by Louis Dobermann around 1890 and named after him. The Doberman is well known for the qualities of alertness, agility, Muscular power, and tempermental fire. At first, the Doberman was used exclusively as a guard and home watch dog. As it developed, its qualities of ready intelligence and ability to absorb and retain training brought it into demand as a police and war dog. The properly bred and trained Doberman has a sane mind and a sound body; the heart and spirit of a gentleman."

This card titled Challenge of the Yukon was issued by Quaker Oats in 1938. A stamped signature of Sargeant Preston appears at the bottom of the following description on the back of the card: "DOBERMAN PINSCHER is a one of the most noble and useful of all dogs. He originated in Germany. He is very sinewy, graceful and fearless. Stands from 26 to 28 inches high. Is easily trained, and has been used extensively in police work, and also as a "Seeing Eye" dog for the blind. Name of the dog pictured here is Champion Westphalia's Apollo."

This is a lovely image of a blue Doberman on a card from Germany. The writing on the back of the card is entirely in German. It was enclosed in packages of cigarettes in Berlin.

Sorry, we don't have any complete sets of playing cards. These were from collections of antique cards and there is no way of knowing how old they are or where one might find more of them. They are certainly a part of Doberman Pinscher history.

Saluki card from 
England This playing card was issued in 1996 by U.S. Games Systems, Inc. It was printed in Belgium and the lovely illustrations were done by Tomas Markevicius as part of the Dogs of the World Card Collection. The Doberman is appropriately the nine of hearts. To the right is a copy of the back of the cards from this set.
