mace and about a third of the world’s nutmeg. It also grows cacao, sugar,
bananas and a wide variety of other fruit and vegetables. Some of its beaches,
especially Grand Anse, a dazzling two-mile stretch of white sand, are very fine,
but the rest of the island is just as beautiful, rising from a generally rugged
coast to a spectacular mountainous interior. The island is green, well forested
and cultivated and is blessed with plenty of rain in the wet season. Grenada is
the most southerly of the Windward Islands. In contrast to other Windward Islands
which have had a similar history of disputed ownership between the French and
English, the French cultural influence in Grenada has completely died out. The
population is very young; 38% are under 15 years old and nearly
26% are in the 15-29 years’ age bracket.

Guyana is a little country, which lies on the North Eastern shoulder of South
America near the equator.
Said to be the legendary El Dorado, Guyana is the only English-speaking country
located in South America. The name 'Guyana' is derived from an Amerindian word
meaning; land of many waters - and indeed it is a land of many waters- with three
mighty rivers and many tributaries, creeks and waterfalls.

Ceremonies to formalise their position as Sovereign. Since Queen
Elizabeth ‘s accession on February 6 a year earlier, this day had been planned
in great detail. King George VI had been the last monarch to be crowned on
12 May, 1937. Sixteen years later, people gathered together to watch the
Coronation of his eldest daughter, Elizabeth, as she prepared to take part
in the very ceremony she herself had watched as an 11-year-old girl. On
2 June 2003 a church service was held at Westminster Abbey to commemorate
the 50th anniversary of the Coronation. Her Majesty was the thirty-ninth
Sovereign to be crowned at Westminster Abbey. The Queen, with The Duke of Edinburgh, was driven from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey in the
Gold State Coach, which was pulled by eight grey geldings. The all-white
Coronation Bouquet comprised orchids and lilies-of-the-valley from England,
Stephanotis from Scotland, and carnations from Northern Ireland and the
Isle of Man, with additional orchids from Wales. The Duke of Edinburgh
wore full-dress Naval uniform for the journey to and from the Abbey. While in the
Abbey, he wore a coronet and his duke’s robe over his uniform.

After three decades as part of the UN Trust Territory of the
Pacific under US administration, this westernmost cluster of
the Caroline Islands (Palau one of the islands) opted for independent status in 1978
rather than join the Federated States of Micronesia. A Compact
of Free Association with the US was approved in 1986, but not
ratified until 1993. It entered into force the following year
when the islands gained their independence.

Sharjah is the third largest of the seven states, which forms the United Arab
Emirates which became fully independent in 1971. From that time, it has attracted
attention -- first because of its oil reserves and its strategic location but now
in addition to those, because of its program of economic and social development.
In the last quarter of the twentieth century, the UAE has witnessed the creation
of a truly modern welfare state. Education, health care and social services are
available to all citizens.

The island is about 0.1 times the size of Washington, DC.
In 1974, ethnic differences within the British colony of the
Gilbert and Ellice Islands caused Polynesians of the Ellice Islands to
vote for separation from the Micronesians of the Gilbert Islands.
The following year, the Ellice Islands became the separate British
colony of Tuvalu. Independence was granted in 1978. In 2000, Tuvalu
negotiated a contract leasing its Internet domain name "tv" for 50
million in royalties over the next dozen years.
The climate is tropical moderated by easterly trade winds spring
and summer and westerly gales and heavy rains in the fall and winter.
"Tuvalu" means 'group of eight' referring to the country's eight
traditionally inhabited islands.

one of the smallest countries on earth. The capital is
Funafuti, note - adminstrative offices are located in
Vaiaku Village on Fongfale Islet. Tuvalu does not have an
embassy in the U.S. It does, however, have an UN office
in New York City.

Zambia is in Africa and become an
independent nation in 1964, but 2000 was the first year that they issued
dog stamps. Since then, they have come out with four Souvenir Sheets and a
small collection of individual dog stamps that surprisingly included a
Corgi as well. This lovely S/S is one of the
nicest that they have done. The combination of dogs is most unique.

the Grenadines in the Caribbean in 1995 to celebrate the 95th
Birthday of the Queen Mother. The Corgi sleeping next to her
was one of her favorites.
It is a nice piece of art for any
Corgi collector. The sheet alone is 4 inches by 5 inches.

This second souvenir sheet was put out by St. Vincent and
the Grenadines in the Caribbean as well. I find it interesting that the photos
were obviously taken at the same time as the souvenir sheet above. From the labeling,
the photos were taken in 1987, but I know that the stamps were not issued until
2000, for the Queen Mother's 100th birthday. The Corgi
at her feet is the same one that is sleeping above. This is a large sheet, measuring
6 by 6 inches and although it is very hard to scan, the shield on the bottom
left is a brilliant gold.
