Tri-Color and Black & Tan Collie Stamps

Collie stamps from Abkhazia

The economy in the former Soviet Union is in very sad shape. To bolster their income, the independent Russian states have started issuing topical stamps in the hope that the world market will buy them and not require the associated postal services. As of this date Abkhazia is a fragment of the old USSR, its either a part of Georgia or a new country, depending on who you ask. They started printing their own passports in Oct.. 1998, but it's unclear how universally they will be recognized. The Republic of Abkhazia covers 3,300 square miles between the eastern shores of the Black Sea and the crestline of the main Caucasus range, from the rivers Psou(in the North) and ingur (in the South). The coastal valleys are humid and subtropical. At higher altitudes the weather ranges from moderately cold to such freezing temperatures that the snow never melts.

Collie stamps from Askamyana

The economy in Russia since the break up of the Soviet Union has such high inflation that stamps that were previously issued are not of enough value to mail a letter any more, so to remedy the situation, the local Post Offices have taken blocks of five "old" printed stamps and overprinted them with a new image and a new value. These stamps come in a set of five different colored stamps all with the same overprint. Last time that I got in some overprints, I assumed that they would remain available. I was wrong and I never saw more copies of those. I expect these to be equally as rare and collectable. There is no telling how many of the overprints they produced (not many), since they were never designed to be sold on the world market. They are of value only for a short while until the actual stamps can be printed. Unfortunately, I do not have the original stamp issued to match the overprint.

Collie stamps from Bhutan

Bhutan is a tiny, landlocked country, squeezed between China and India, the two most populous countries. It takes its native name -- Druk Yul -- from the fierce storms that sweep down out of the Himalayan Mountains. Druk Yul means "land of the thunder dragon." Bhutan is the last surviving Buddhist kingdom in the Himalayas and its deeply devout Buddhist culture bears a strong resemblance to that found in Tibet. Wary of foreign influence, Bhutan has full diplomatic ties with only 16 countries and sightseers were barred from the country until 1974. Even now, Bhutan limits the number of tourists to just 4,000 a year.

Collie stamps from Buriatia

A very nice Collie stamp from Buriatia.
Buriatia is in southern Siberia near Lake Baykal on the Mongolian border and such the Buryat people are Buddhists as well.
The collapse of the Soviet Union has created a gold mine for stamp collectors. The local governments have issued some wonderful stamps in an effort to sell them to the world market and not even have to provide the associated service of mailing letters with them. This is a real boon when you see such lovely examples as this stamp put out by Buriatia in 2001.

Collie stamps from Dagestan

This stamp was issued in 2000.
Dagestan is one of the republics of the former USSR. Located between the Caspian Sea on the East and Caucasus mountains on the West, it is probably one of the most attractive places in that part of the globe. Its area is close to that of Scotland. With population of just above 2 million people, Dagestan is the homeland to over 36 different nationalities, and each one of those nationalities has its own unique language. Such combination of languages, cultures, types of landscape and customs makes it a one of a kind place in the world. These days, however, Dagestan is going through the times of heavy unrest, both political and ethnical.

The Falkland Islands are a group of islands in the south Atlantic. The two main islands, East Falkland and West Falkland, lie 300 miles east of the Argentina coast. About 200 smaller islands form a total land area of approximately 4,700 square miles. The capitol and only town is (Port) Stanley. Argentiina has claimed the islands since 1820. Argentina sustained 655 men killed, while Britain lost 236. Sargentina's ignominious defeat discredited the military government and let to the restoration of civilian rule in Argentina in 1983.

Collie stamps from Guyana

Guyana is a little country, which lies on the North Eastern shoulder of South America near the equator. Said to be the legendary El Dorado, Guyana is the only English-speaking country located in South America. The name 'Guyana' is derived from an Amerindian word meaning; land of many waters - and indeed it is a land of many waters- with three mighty rivers and many tributaries, creeks and waterfalls.
The British founded Guyana in 1781. It passed for a while to the French, who largely rebuilt it, and in 1784 to the Dutch, who called the capital Stabroek. Regaining control in 1812, the British government renamed it British Guiana. In 1966 it became an independent Guyana.

Collie stamps from Kalmykia

This stamp was produced in 1998.
Kalmykia is a republic within the Russian Federation. The Kalmyks settled the Volga River region in the seventeenth century. A Mongol people, they were originally Buddhist in faith. Annexed to Russian in 1771, a Kalmyk Autonomous Province was created by the Bolsheviks in 1920. This was abolished during the Second World War, when, in common with many other ethnic minorities, the Kalmyks were deemed to have displayed insufficient enthusiasm for fighting for Communism. The customary mass deportations followed. An Autonomous Republic was re-established in 1958.

Collie stamps from Korea

A lovely duo on this stamp issued by North Korea in 1989.
Following World War II, Korea was split, with the northern half coming under Communist domination and the southern portion becoming Western-orented. KIM ChongIl has ruled North Korea since his father and the country's founder, president KIM Il-song, died in 1994. After decades of mismanagement, the North relies heavily on international food aid to feeed its population while continuing to expend resources to maintain an army of about 1 million. North Korea's long-range missile development and research into nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons and massive conventional armed forces are of major concern to the international community. In december 2002, North Korea repudiated a 1994 agreement that shut down its nuclear reactors and expelled UN monitors, further raising fears it would produce nuclear weapons.
The area of North Korea is slightly smaller than Mississippi. The climate is temperate with rainfall concentrated in summer. Mostly hills and mountains separated by deep, narrow valleys; The people are traditionally Buddhist and Confucanist. note: autonomous religious activities now almost nonexistent, government-sponsored religious groups exist to provide illusion of religious freedom. They speak Korean. the capitol is Pyongyang.

Collie stamps from Monaco

Economic development was spurred in the late 19th century with a railroad linkup to France and the opening of a casino. Since then, the principality's mild climate, splendid scenery, and gambling facilities have made Monaco world famous as a tourist and recreation center. Monaco is located in western Europe, bordering the Mediterranean Sea on the southern coast of France, near the border of Italy. It is about three times the size of The Mall in Washington DC. It has no natural resources and no natural hazards. It is the second smallest independent state in the world (after Holy See); almost entirely urban with a population of about 31,987. Its official language is French, with English, Italian and Monegasque. It is a constitutional monarchy. Its independence was in 1419 (beginning of the rule by the House of Grimaldi). Collie stamps from Russia Collie stamps from Russia Collie stamps from Russia

These are included simply because they were the only overprints that were available in past years, in this case 1993. There was a limited number released to the outside world and then they were all gone. These scans are for historical significance only since the originals are absolute collector's items now. Be sure to get a set of the new overprints. As far as I know, there were 100 of each overprint available and the small number of those that I was able to get will be gone very quickly.

Collie stamp from Somalia

Somalia, also called the Somali Democratic Republic, is located on the Horn of Africa, the easternmost part of the African continent. Although it gained its independence in 1960, nearly constant unrest has kept it from establishing a lasting presence in the area.
This stamp was put out by Somalia, a country on the east coast of Africa in 1997. This entire set is one of the nicest that I have seen in a long time. It should remain available for some time.

Collie stamp from Touva

Touva (often spelled Tuva) is a country in the southern area of Siberia. It's a unique place with the landscapes ranging from the desert to the permafrost, and local fauna-from camels to reindeers. Touva is known as almost the only place in the world where shamanism, a very ancient religion, is preserved, kept and cultivated in its original form.
The republic of Touva lies at the upper reaches of the Siberian Yenisey River and forms a barrier between Russia and Mongolia. Since its independence from the former Soviet Union, Tuva continues to struggle to work on the appropriate way to safeguard and develop its own identity and sovereignty going through the difficult changes from a command-orientated planned economy towards an open market economy. Like so many other former Russian states, the diversity of the people is starting to be felt as the original culture, traditions and religion are gaining more followers.

Collie stamps from Turks and Caicos

Turks and Caicos are two sets of islands in the Bahamas. They are British Crown colonies and a couple of years ago, they put out a set of dog stamps honoring the work that dogs do. Different breeds were chosen and the lovely Collie was used to represent "companion dogs". This one was pretty obvious, but the Basenji was used as a "hearing ear dog" and a couple of the others were pretty surprising as well. These will be available also for some time.

Collie stamps from Udmurtia

The break up of the Soviet Union has allowed the independent Russian states to offer stamps from their post offices. In an effort to bring in more money than can be earned by mailing letters, they have issued topical stamps for the collectors. This is a gold mine for those of us who collect lovely stamps. This is a good example of how we all win. Udmurtia is a Russian state that issued this Tri-colored Collie stamp last year.

Collie stamp from Udmurtia

What a lovely smooth collie puppy stamp by Udmurtia in 2000.
Udmurtia is approximately midway between Moscow to the Urals. Its land is a hilly wooden plain with numerous swamps, springs and rivers. Its climate is considered a bit too wet and not healthy. Summer is short, rainy and cool; autumn is very cloudy (often there are almost no sunny days from October till January), foggy and rainy. This not very friendly land was originally inhabited by Udmurts (or Votyaks). These peaceful and quiet Finnish people maintained their culture heritage there at least for five thousand years. Their religion is also ancient. They worship the God (called Inmar, The Highest Being) and His assistants governing various elements. With the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Udmurtia became one of the local republics and as such they now issue stamps including this great Collie,

Collie stamp from Madagascar

Collie stamp from Madagascar Mozambique is 111 years old. The country came into existence in its present form as a result of an Anglo-Portuguese treaty of May 1891 and gained its independence from Portugal in 1975. The Mozambique created in 1891 was not a piece of random map drawing but an attempt to make sense of the history of the region in a single colonial state. In doing so, it accepted a part of the African coast, which was established in the sixteenth century when the Portuguese divided their command in eastern Africa between the states of Mozambique and Mombassa.

Collie stamp from Touva

Tuvalu consists of a densely populated, scattered group of nine coral atolls about one-half of the way from Hawaii to Australia. The island is about 0.1 times the size of Washington, DC. Collie stamp from Touva In 1974, ethnic differences within the British colony of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands caused Polynesians of the Ellice Islands to vote for separation from the Micronesians of the Gilbert Islands. The following year, the Ellice Islands became the separate British colony of Tuvalu. Independence was granted in 1978. In 2000, Tuvalu negotiated a contract leasing its Internet domain name "tv" for 50 million in royalties over the next dozen years. The climate is tropical moderated by easterly trade winds spring and summer and westerly gales and heavy rains in the fall and winter. Collie stamps from Tanzania

This souvenir sheet from Tanzania was issued in 1996. The background and sheep are an excellent touch to set off the lovely tri Collie.
Tanzania, the largest country in East Africa, is renowned for its magnificent wildlife, lakes, mountains, and scenery. The country boasts a wealth of natural attractions, including the famed Ngorongoro crater and the formidable Mount Kilimanjaro. It is also home to magnificent game reserves: Gombe Stream National Park, with its chimpanzee sanctuary; and the breathtaking plains of the Serengeti National Park, which hosts the annual migration of at least two million wildebeest with leopards and lions hot on their heels. Add to this the lovely beaches of the exotic islands of Zanzibar, Pemba, and Mafia. Tanzania issued a couple of different sets of dog stamps, including this beguiling stamp in 1994.
