This drawing is from Cofton Collections. These cards were from a series titled
"Dogs-Reprint of 1963" issued in 1988. The back of the card has a
listing of the various and sundry items they have for sale.
Japanese Chin Card 1(Cofton Collections reprint, 1988)... $5.95 each
This lovely photograph (individual and dog not identified) comes from a series
of cards from a set titled "Dogs and Friend" issued in 1938 by Carreras.
On the back of the card, it says:
'THE JAPANESE SPANIEL'
"Japanese Spaniels really came originally from Japan, and
out there they were treated with great ceremony, almost as
great as that which surrounded their cousins, the Pekingese.
They have rather lovely and appealing eyes, and if they live
in the country they become quite sporting. They are not
very good dogs to keep in town, as their coats pick up
the mud so easily. At one time they were very popular,
but at present one seldom sees them as pets,
although there are plenty at shows".
Japanese Chin Card 2(Carreras,Ddogs and Friend 1938)... SOLD OUT
This puppy card is from a set put out by Godfrey Phillips
titled "Our Puppies" issued in 1936. The following is printed
on the back of the card: 'OUR PUPPIES'
THE JAPANESE SPANIEL "This dog is a relation of the
Pekingese. Nice little companion, but is delicate and
requires experienced handling and care".
Japanese Chin Card 3((Godfrey Phillips OUR PUPPIES, 1936)... $12.95 each
The card on the left was issued in 1939 by Godfrey Phillips, titled 'Our Dogs'.
The following is printed on the back of the card: "OUR DOGS" THE JAPANESE
"This is a dainty, dignified toy-dog of Japanese origin.
Early importations into England were large, but
skilful breeding has reduced the size considerably and
the average weight now is about 6 lbs. The colours are--
black-and-white and red-and-white".
On the right is another puppy card with the same picture. It was issued as
part of the "Our Puppies" set in 1936. The
back of the card has the following: "OUR PUPPIES" THE JAPANESE
"This is a dainty, dignified toy-dog of Japanese origin.
Average weight is about six pounds, and colours are
black/white and red/white".
Japanese Chin Card 4(Godfrey Phillips OUR DOGS, 1939)left... $14.95 each
Japanese Chin Card 5(Godfrey Phillips OUR PUPPIES, 1936)right... $12.95 each
Gallaher issued this lovely card from a set titled simply "Dogs"
in 1934. The following is shown on the back of the card:
JAPANESE "The Japanese is a dog which many people confuse
with the Pekingese, yet a glance should be sufficient to
distinguish them. The extra length of leg and different
formation of the jaw will give them away at once, apart from
the variation in colouring. Many people will prefer the
fascinating, almost cheeky beauty of the Japanese to the
rather indignant expression of the average 'Peke'."
Japanese Chin Card 6(Gallaher Champion Dogs, 1934)... $9.95 each
Wills "Puppies by Dawson-Reprint of 1940" were issued in 1990.
They were first issued in 1940 and now sell for about $400.00 each. However,
we only have a reprint of this lovely card with the drawing and
the description on the back by Lucy Dawson.
"SADIE" AND "MICHI" "(Japanese Spaniels)
I have not had an opportunity of drawing many of these
little dogs--so I was pleased to meet "Sadie" and
"Michi", and very polite and gracious they were.
Think they liked having so much attention, indeed
they seemed to expect it; I suppose any puppies brought up
in such luxury would do so."
Japanese Chin Card 7(Wills Puppies by Dawson, 1940)... SOLD OUT
This gorgeous card was issued by Wills in 1914. There was also a reprint
issued in 1987, but the two copies that I have are originals. On the back
it says,
JAPANESE SPANIEL
These small long-haired dogs are reputed to be natives of Japan,
and it seems quite certain that they have been bred in that country
for centuries, although some experts claim that they originated either
in China or Tibet. Early in the 19th century, British seamen often
brought specimens home from the Far East. In more recent years the
breed has attained more general popularity, and some four years ago the
Japanese Chin Club was formed to foster the breed in this country.
The head of the Japanese is large and broad for the size of the
dog, and the jaws slightly turned up. The eyes are large, dark and
prominent, and the body compact and squarely built. Its coat may be
either black and white or red and white, and should be long, straight,
and silky; its weight should be from 4 to 9 lbs. and its height at the
shoulder about 10 inches.
Japanese Chin Card 6(Wills, ORIGINAL, 1914)... $24.95 each
This unusual card was put out in Turkish Trophies Cigarettes when they were 10 cents
for 10. This was a series of Fables and this one was called "The Mischievous Dog. A
dog was so mischievous that his Master hung a weight from his neck. The Dog showed this
weight as his badge of honor, until other dogs told him it was really a mark of
disgrace. Moral: -- Dont mistake Notoriety for Fame." This card is hard to
find because, in addition to not being listed as a dog card, it is collected by
fanciers from all three unusual breeds.
Japanese Chin Card 9(Turkish Trophy Cigarettes,)... SOLD OUT
Japanese Chin Playing Cards
Sorry, we don't have any complete sets of playing cards. These were
from collections of antique cards and there is no way of knowing how
old they are or where one might find more of them. They are certainly
a part of Japanese Chin history.
Japanese Chin Playing Card 1... $4.95 each pair
Japanese Chin Playing Card 2... $4.95 each
