England used to put out cigarette cards with different topics on them. This one
is from the 1925 set put out by Players & Sons called Scenic Backgrounds. On
the back it says: "King Charles Sapniels. Enghish Toy Spaniels, now designated
King Charles Spaniels, are descended from the aristocratic pets of the court of
Henry VIII, and comprise Ruby, Tricolour, and Blenheim. History records that
the Queen of Scots was accompanied to the scaffold by her Toy Spaniel, and King
Charles I, from whom they take their present name, was always attended by his
favourite Spaniels. The varieties differ only in colour, the Blenheim being
white and rich red, and the Tricolour, black, tan and white. Weight 8 to 11
lbs. Height at shoulder about 8 ins."

It was issued by Cadet Sweets in their second series of dogs in 1958. On the
back it says, "King Charles Spaniel. Though of much earlier origin than the
Tudors, these English toy dogs were favourites of Charles II and his Court.
They have a reputation of being gentle and affectionate pets. They stand about
10 in. high and weigh around 10 lbs. Their coats are long and glossy and their
colour may be black and tan, chestnut, or black and white and chestnut."

This magnificant head study is a reprint done in 1994 of a card put out by John
Player & Sons in 1940, called Dogs Heads from Ireland. On the back it says,
"King Charles Spaniel. The origin of the King Charles Spaniel is indefinite,
but the breed has been known for centuries. In England, it was very fashionable
at the time of Charles II and James II, both of whom held it in great favour.
In those days, the King Charles Spaniel had a long muzzle, but during the last
century, breeders began to shorten this by cross-breeding -- perhaps with Pugs
-- and eventually produced the flat face. The long-muzzled type is still
preserved, however, and in this form the breed is known as the Cavalier King
Charles Spaniel. The breed was at one time used occasionally as a sporting
Spaniel, but is now kept only as a show dog or pet."

This card was issued by Gallaher Cigarettes as part of their first series of
Dogs in 1936. On the back it says, "The King Charles Spaniel. It is well-known
that the King Charels Spaniel was one of the breeds favoured by King Charels II
and it got its name from this connection. The strain, however, has been much
improved since those days: more than a century ago the third Duke of
Marlborough, by breeding with a red and white Cocker Spaniel, evolved the
Blenheim, the present type of King Charles Spaniel. The Blenheim was named
after the Duke's residence and this dog is now one of the most popular of the
smaller breeds."
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Card 11(Gallaher, 1936)... $9.95 each
This is an actual photograph of Ch. Ashtonmore Barritone issued by John
Sinclair in 1938 designed to be inserted into packets of 20 cigarettes.
On the right is the same photo issued at the same time, to be inserted in the

(Pure English) Toy Breed, named after Charles II, has been closely associated
wtih Royalty, the favourite of many Crowned head, and frequently the playthings
of Royal Babies. One is to be seen in the arms of the Young Prince in the
famous portrait of Queen Victoria and her children. These dogs are small,
sturdy, active and intelligent, make ideal pets, being good tempered and never
snappish. Owned by: Mrs. Raymond Mallock, 2, Preston Park Avenue, Brighton."

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Card 13 (Sinclair Champion Dogs, 1938)right... $6.95 each
This card was originally issued by W.D & H.O. Wills in 1914, but was reprinted
in 1987. On the back it says, "King Charles Spaniel.
This dog takes its name from King Charels II, in whose time the Toy Spaniel
reached the zenith of its popularity. These dogs were the pampered
favourites of the King and Court, and had free access to all parts of
Whitehall, even on State occasions. In intelligence and vivacity the King
Charles Spaniel is undoubtedly far in advance of the modern toy dog; it is
most aristocratic, dainty, and affectionate, and is not continually barking
at strangers. The beauty of its long silky coat amply repays all trouble spent
upon it. In colour they should be black-and-tan. The nose must be black, and
the legs should be rather short. They should weigh from 7 to 10 lbs."

The only thing printed on the back of the card is the number 89,
a logo pertaining to Service Line and the name of the series,
"Dogs & Cats", but the book that goes with it lists it as a CKCS.
The one on the right is card 41 and much more typical for the breed.

H. Ellis & Co. issued these gorgeous headstudies of the King

Every breed deserves something really special and this is it for the Cavaliers.
This is a silk that was issued in 1910 by American Tobacco. They are incredibly
hard to maintain, so finding one in such lovely condition after 97 years is
quite an accomplishment. There is only slight freying on the two ends as you
can see. This shows a Blenheim Toy Spaniel and it is protected in a hard
plastic cover to save it from any further wear. It should be the center of any
card collection. One only.

Playing Cards
Sorry, we don't have any complete sets of playing cards. These were
from collections of antique cards and there is no way of knowing how
old they are or where one might find more of them. They are certainly
a part of Cavalier King Charles Spaniel history.
This is a playing card that was issued in 1997 as part of The Famous Dogs of
the World Playing Cards by Trioview Ltd/ Heritage Toy & Game Co. Ltd. It was
printed in Belgium. The back has a simple yellow and brown pattern on it.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Playing Card 1... SOLD OUT
This playing card was issued in 1996 by U.S. Games Systems, Inc. It was printed
in Belgium and the lovely illustrations were done by Tomas Markevicius as part
of the Dogs of the World Card Collection. The lovely Cavalier is issued as the
two of clubs. To the right is a copy of the back of the cards from this set.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Playing Card 2... SOLD OUT
This is a playing card that was probably issued about 4 years ago. The back
has a blue and white pattern on it.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Playing Card 3... $4.95 each
This unique artwork card was probably produced in the early 1950's. It shows a
lady sitting at her vanity with her little spaniel sitting on the bench with
her. I love finding unusual items for the different breeds and this is one of
my favorites.
The card on the right is also artwork, this time of Lady Hamilton. I do not have
a full deck of either of these designs, unfortunately.
Playing Card 4 or 5 -- $4.95 -- The pair can be ordered together for $6.95
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Playing Card 4... $4.95 each
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Playing Card 5... $4.95 each
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Playing Card 4 and 5(pair)... $6.95 each
This card was printed by a Japanese Company. I don't know who
might have posed for this picture, but isn't is appropriate for
the King Charles Spaniel to be on the seven of hearts? He is
now decidedly a dog of luxury.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Playing Card 6... $5.95 each
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Cigar Band
This Cigar Band was issued in Holland by Senator Cigars as part of a collectable
set of dog breeds.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Cigar Band... $6.95 each
* one of the cheapest unique treats for yourself or a friend (great for
club trophies as well!)
* It is absolutely true that you will often find some of these cards at very
reasonable prices. On the other hand, if
you add in the gas, hours, and hassles that it has taken to find them, you may
find it easier to just get them from us while we have them :*) I don't always
count on getting more in the near future. I get them when I can find them and
the stock is not always constant.
* I do have other breeds available. Let me know and perhaps I can do a page for
your breed.
