Cairn Terriers are blessed with some of the nicest cards and stamps available for any breed.

Gallaher issued this set of cards titled "Dogs A Series", in 1936. Printing on the back of the card, "The Cairn Terrier is claimed to be the oldest Scottish breed and it is certainly much older than the Scottish Terrier. Nearly 150 years ago it was referred to as a common terrier with long body, handy legs and of a sandy-lightish colouring, very different from the present type. Although the breed has been improved the Cairn still retains the hunting instinct, going to ground for rodents of all descriptions, work for which the smallness of its body makes it particulary suited. It is an ideal companion and guard."
Cairn Terrier Card 1(Gallaher, 1936)... $9.95 each

Priory Tea "I Spy Dogs",were issued in 1957. This was actually a game in which you filled out the form on the back of the card until you have a completed set and you could then get some kind of an award. On the back it says, " A lively little dog. Has rough dense coat, usually darker on the face."

A lovely headstudy by artist Peter Biegel. Players issued these beautiful paintings titled "Dogs Heads by Biegel" in 1940. On the back it says, "From the Western Highlands of Scotland we get several breeds of Terriers, of which the Cairn is probably one of the oldest, and nowadays one of the most widely known. It is remarkably active, courageous and tough despite its diminutive appearance. In its native country it is still used to drive foxes, badgers and other vermin from their refuges; in the south it is more prominent on the show bench and has become a popular pet. This popularity is due to some extent to its having been a favourite breed of the Prince of Wales (now the Duke of Windsor). Almost any colouring of the hard thick coat is acceptable."
Cairn Terrier Card 3(Players, 1940)... $7.95 each

Wills issued "Dogs" in 1937 and enclosed them singly in Wild Woodbine Cigarettes. Printed on the back as follows: "A game, active little working terrier, strong, though compactly built, very fine in movement. Skull broad in proportion, strong jaw with large teeth, powerful muzzle. Eyes set wide apart, medium size and of dark hazel colour. Small pointed ears carried erect. Tail short, well-furnished with hair, but not feathery, carried gaily, but not over back. Compact body, straight back of medium length and well coupled. Well-sprung deep ribs; strong hindquarters. Shoulders sloping; medium length of leg covered with hard hair. Coat must be double-coated, with profuse, hard outer coat, and undercoat resembling fur. Colour: red, sandy, grey, brindle or nearly black.
Cairn Terrier Card 4(Wills, 1937)... $5.95 each

This very nice painting by artist Arthur Wardle was issued by Players in 1931. The title of series is "Dogs by Wardle-Full Length". On the back it says, "The Cairn Terrier, an ancient Scottish variety, in its unimproved state was probably the forebear of the Scottish Terrier, the Skye Terrier and West Highland White Terrier, but it was not until 1909 that he appeared on the Show Bench. He is smaller than the other Scottish Terriers and is now one of the most popular varieties, being entered in large numbers at all the big Shows. His head should be foxy, small and pointed, his ears erect, his body compact and his legs short.. His coat should be harsh and shaggy in appearance. Colours: red, sandy, grey, brindle and nearly black. Height: 9-10 in. Weight: 14 lb.

Cofton Collections "Dogs 1st Series-Reprint of 1963", were reissued in 1988. The back of the card gives the address of Coftons in California and a short list of the collectables available.

These 'Turf' cards were printed on the package of Carreras Cigarettes and had to be cut-out for saving. They were titled "Famous Dog Breeds" and were issued in 1952. There is nothing printed on the back of the card. Still a very nice drawing and a credit to any collection.
Cairn Terrier Card 8 (Carreras Turf, 1952)... SOLD OUT

This set of photo cards are by Carreras and titled "Dogs & Friend." The cards were issued in 1936. The back of the card is as follows, described by Lady Kitty Ritson. "The Cairn Terrier is one of the oldest if not the oldest, breed of Scottish dogs. It is closely related both to the white West Highland terrier and the 'Scottie.' It is extraordinarily popular both as a show dog and as a companion, and is always to be seen in large quantities at shows. Breeders are divided into two camps as to which type they prefer. They are very sporting little dogs, but it cannot be denied that they are inclined to be noisy, which rather spoils them for people who live in towns."
Cairn Terrier Card 9 (Carreras Dogs and Friend, 1936)... $5.95 each

This is a Tea Card issued by Horniman Tea in 1961. The title of the set was simply "Dogs". On the back it says, "The Cairn is probably the aboriginal Terrier of Scotland, from which the modern Scottie and most of the other short-legged Terriers were developed. Is the smallest of the Terriers and at the present time easily the most popular.
The outstanding characteristic is general shagginess and the coat should never be clipped. Head is foxy, colours being red, sandy, grey, brindle, or nearly black with dark points."

Cofton Collections "Dogs 3rd Series-Reprint of 1963", were reissued in 1988. The back of the card has the address of Cofton in California and a brief list of the variety of 'collectables' available thru Cofton Collections.
Cairn Terrier Card 11 (Cofton Collection reissue, 1988)... $5.95 each

Hornimans Tea put out this set of cards titled 'PETS' in 1961. The cards were enclosed singly in all 1/4-lb packets of Hornimans Tea. The following is printed on the back of the card:
"HOUSING: in house should have own basket with blanket to lie on. Always keep basket in same place. If outside, draught-proof kennel raised from ground, or in stable or out house; straw bedding changed daily. Regular exercise. FOOD: about 3-4 ozs. raw or partly cooked meat, plus dog meal or stale brown bread; small amount of veg. and gravy--not sloppy. Feed in evening. Dry biscuit or small quantity of dog meal in morning. Fresh water always available".
Cairn Terrier Card 12 (Horniman Tea, 1961)... SOLD OUT

Pattreiouex issued these lovely photographs in card form titled "Dogs", in 1939,and enclosed them in Senior Service Cigarettes. The following is printed on the back of the card. "The Cairn is the small Scottish working terrier of the Western Isles. His only fault is excitability.
GENERAL HINTS
BACK-FETCHING (2). At first let the pup see the dummy; then walk down wind and hide it in the long grass, close at first--make him use his nose. Gradually increase the distance; a good dog will go back a quarter of a mile, and will automatically pick up anything dropped.

Wills "Puppies by Dawson-Reprint of 1940", were reissued in 1990. Described on the back of the card by the artist, Lucy Dawson:
"David" hadn't much idea of sitting, and anyhow, there were much more interesting things to do~~leaves to chase, his mother to tease and a ball to play with, to say nothing about shoes and his brothers~~so I didn't get all his attention. Suddenly he would discover his tail and try to chase that also."
Cairn Terrier Card 14 (Puppies by Dawson-reprint, 1990)... SOLD OUT

Gallaher issued these lovely large cards titled "Dogs" Cairn Terriers card from England

in 1934. The cards were then enclosed in Gallahers DeLuxe Cigarettes. Description of the illustration is shown on the back. " The Cairn Terrier is supposed to be the oldest of all Scottish breeds of dog, and was primarily used for otter hunting. From the old-type, show specimens were evolved and the year 1909 is given as the commencement of the modern history of the breed. The dog illustrated can claim the distinction of holding his own in the show ring up to his fifteenth birthday, and has won innumerable prizes. He is owned by Mrs. Dixon.

Sinclair issued "Champion Dogs" in 1938, a series of real photos. Description on the back of the card "This breed of Cairns has been in the Hawke family for 50 years, and Ch. Lockyers Ian's pedigree goes straight back to the original pair Lord Hawke brought from the Isle of Skye, where they were originally called "Short-Haired Skyes." Cairns have been used for bolting foxes and otters, are excellent ratters, and very game and sporting. Ch. Lockyers Ian won his certificates at Cruft's; Kensington; Cheltenham, 1937."

Cairn Terrier Card 17 (Sinclair Champion Dogs, 1938)... SOLD OUT

This beautiful head study by artist Arthur Wardle titled "Dogs Heads(Eire)-Reprint of 1940" was issued by Players originally in 1940. This is an authorized reproduction issued by Players in 1994 and sells for much less than than the original. On the back it says, "Originally a vermin killer for crofters in the Scottish Highlands, the Cairn Terrier owes its birth as a show dog and popular companion to Mrs. Alastair Campbell, who gave them their first publicity by naming them "short-haired Skye Terriers," thus rousing the ire of the breeders of the then established Skye Terriers. Out of the argument so begun, the name "Cairn" originated and the new variety began its career as a show dog. It has prospered rapidly and is now one of the most popular of all the terrier varieties."

These beautiful pictures of "Champion Dogs" were issued by Ardath in 1934. On the front is an artist's drawing of a Cairn, International Champion "DIVOR OF GUNTHORPE" Owned by- Mrs. A Dixon
The back is shown to the left, with a diagramed standard of the breed from that time in history.

Godfrey Phillips issued these lovely headstudies, "Our Dogs", in 1939. A short description is printed on the reverse side of the card:
"The Cairn has an alert intelligence, and closely resembles the West Highland White Terier. He is of handy size and is good to look upon--quick on the uptake and very loving." The card on the left (23) was designed to fit inside boxes of 10 cigarettes, while the one on the right was for boxes of 20 cigarettes.

A nice headstudy from Players "Dogs Heads", issued in 1940. On the back it says, "Though his origin cannot be traced, the Cairn's career as show dog can be credited to Mrs. Alastair Campbell who, in 1908, began a publicity campaign for the rugged little working terriers which were found in the Isle of Skye. There they were used by the crofters to keep down such vermin as foxes and otters, and their small size and gameness were invaluble in pursuing their quarry into their underground retreats. The first name for the breed was "short-haired Skye Terriers" to distinguish it from the then established Skye Terrier, but this created so much opposition from lovers of the older breed that the new breed was eventually given its present name. In the Highlands these small terriers are still used on vermin, but in England they are kept almost entirely as show dogs or companions.
Cairn Terrier Card 23 (Players, 1940)... $19.95 each

This lovely photo is a Golden Fleece Australia 'swap card' titled 'Pedigree Dogs' issued in 1972. On the back it says, "The Cairn Terrier comes from the Isle of Skye and is one of the oldest true British Terriers. Once kept in packs by Scottish Lords for Fox and Badger hunting. In Australia the dog is used for protection against snakes and makes a good watch dog.
The Cairn is a strong active dog with head shorter and wider than other Terriers. He has a hard weather-proof coat which despite some shagginess needs little attention."

Cairn Terrier Card 24 (Golden Fleece Australia, 1972)... $7.95 each

Players issued these "Top Dogs-Grandee" in 1979. Description on the back as follows: "This small, hardy terrier from the Western Highlands and Islands could well be the tap root from which all the terriers of Scotland have sprung. Brought to the show ring by Mrs. Alastair Campbell, who called them Short Haired Skyes, they were first shown at Crufts in 1909 and in 1910 the Kennel Club recognised them as Cairn Terriers. Cheeky wee terriers, what they lack in size they make up for in courage and gameness. Natural dogs they need little trimming and come in several colours; red, sandy, brindle and grey, have harsh outer coats with thick furry undercoats. They are demons for work and several show dogs qualify for Working Certificates awarded by Masters of Foxhounds. Easy dogs to keep, they need the minumum of grooming, are seldom aggressive but always jaunty and ready for a walk. Ideal weight 14 lbs."

Oak Mfg. issued these lovely photographs on Premier trading cards titled "Dogs" in 1950, and dispensed in vending machines. On the back it says, "While the Cairn Terrier has characteristics in common with other breeds of terriers, there are also marked differences. In head, the Cairn differs from all other terriers. Likewise the height from the ground is another distinctive feature. His typical coat is a third distinguishing marking.
The Cairn is a hardy dog, active, game and intelligent. He moves about freely and does not cringe on being handled, but instead is rather aloof and nonchalant."
Cairn Terrier Card 27 (Oak Mfg., 1950)... $14.95 each

This awesome set of drawings, artist unknown, titled very simply "Dogs" were issued by Hignett 1936. Descripton on the reverse side of the card is as follows: "The Cairn first appeared in the show ring at Inverness in 1909, in a class for "short-haired Skye Terriers." It is probably closely related to Scotland's other Terrier varieties, and was used originally for following the fox and other game into earths and highland cairns, from which it takes its name. To Mrs. J. Alastair Campbell goes the credit for bringing out the breed as a show dog, of which it is now among the most numerous. One of its most prominent breeders is the Baroness Burton."

From a series of 26 etchings by Margurite Kirmse, each with a different poem on the back of each card. The poem on the Cairn Terrier sketch is titled "A Mute Appeal". These lovely sketches were issued by Wills in 1925.

Weeties "Favourite Dogs-New Zealand" issued in 1940, were enclosed in Crispies and Vitabrits. The information on the back of the card is as follows: "The Cairn terrier is a great favorite with lady fanciers and has, for many years, been little more than a show dog or domestic pet. However, he still has his expression of eagerness, a legacy from his hard working ancestors of the highlands of Scotland. He is an active, alert, strong dog, somewhat shaggy in appearance, compactly built and free in movement.

Cairn Terrier Card 30 (Favourite Dogs New Zealand, 1940)... SOLD OUT

A lovely etching from "A Series of 26 Etchings by Margurite Kirmse". The cards were issued by Wills in 1925. Printed on the back is a poem titled "Is It A cat?" Each of the 26 etchings has a different poem on the back of the card.

Weeties "Tailwaggers-Australia" were issued in 1940 and came enclosed in Weeties, Crispies and Vitabrits. This card is No. 52 in a series of 64. The following is printed on the reverse side of the card: "This typical Highland gentleman, with his active and game appearance is immensley popular. He is strongly though compactly built and should stand well forward on his fore-paws. He is very free in movement, with strong quarters, a coat hard enough to resist rain, a head which is small in proportion to his body, and small pointed ears which are carried erect. He is an extremely intelligent and lovable dog.

Do train your dog to have good manners a badly-behaved dog is a reflection on you. Patience is essential in the training of dogs.

This beautiful card is put out by Weeties titled "Popular Pets-New Zealand. The cards were enclosed singly in Weeties, Kornies and Vita-Brits. The Cairn Terrier is No. 21 in the series of 66 cards issued in 1940. The following delightful description is shown on the back of the card: "An excellent and popular pet who can be given great house liberty. Bright, happy and intelligent and acquires a wonderful understanding of his master's and mistresses conversations. In colour, the Cairn is sandy, brindle, light or dark grey. An excellent little watch dog.

Sorry, we don't have any complete sets of playing cards. These were from collections of antique cards and there is no way of knowing how old they are or where one might find more of them. They are certainly a part of Cairn Terrier history.

Cairn Terrier Post Cards

This is an unusual First Dary of Issue Post Card from Finland commemorating the publication of their set of dog stamps. Finland issued a series of puppy stamps in 1998 that included these darling Cairn Terrier puppies. They also issued this lovely post card with the puppy stamp affixed. This is a wonderful opportunity to get the stamp and the card for the price of the post card only.
