Bouvier des Flandres Stamps
Bouvier des Flandres stamp from Belgium

This classic Bouvier stamp was issued by Belgium in 1986 along with the three other native breeds, the Belgium Sheepdog, Turverin, and Malinois. I am at a loss as to why this set is not more readily available, but it has taken me nearly three years to finally find some for sale. It is truly the centerpiece of the Bouvier collection.
Belgium is located in western Europe, bordering the North Sea, between France and the Netherlands. It is about the size of Maryland. The climate is temperate; mild winters, cool summers, rainy, humid, and cloudy. The terrain is flat coastal plains in northwest, central rolling hills, rugged mountains of Ardennes Forest in southeast. They have a couple of natural resources; coal and natural gas. The environment is exposed to intense pressures from human activities; urbanization, dense transportation network, industry intense animal breeding and crop cultivation. The people are 75% Roman Catholic. The official languages; Dutch 60%, French 40%.

Bouvier des Flandres stamp from Kuril Islands Bouvier des Flandres stamp from Kuril Islands

This lovely stamp was issued first by the Kuril Islands in 1997. Many of the local Russian states are issuing stamps with topical value in an effort to generate hard currency for their governments. With a nice enough stamp, it will be bought by collectors and the post office will not have to supply the associated postal services, like actually mailing a letter. This one is definitely an example of a win-win situation. They get the currency and we get a gorgeous stamp. This specific stamp is no longer available from my sources, but I have a couple of copies left. The same photo was issued by Komi a year later.

Bouvier des Flandres stamp from Kalmykia

This stamp was issued by Kalmykia in 1999.
Kalmykia is a republic within the Russian Federation. The Kalmyks settled the Volga River region in the seventeenth century. A Mongol people, they were originally Buddhist in faith. Annexed to Russian in 1771, a Kalmyk Autonomous Province was created by the Bolsheviks in 1920. This was abolished during the Second World War, when, in common with many other ethnic minorities, the Kalmyks were deemed to have displayed insufficient enthusiasm for fighting for Communism. The customary mass deportations followed. An Autonomous Republic was re-established in 1958.

Bouvier des Flandres stamp from Karakalpakia

This Bouvier stamp was also issued in 1999 by Karakalpakia.
Karakalpakia, now under the domain of Uzbekistan, is on the edge of the shrinking Aral Sea, which has recently revealed a shocking scale of environmentally induced disease. Women and children are most severely affected from the spread of pesticides and other pollutants as the lake - once the fourth largest in the world - has turned into a desert, its waters siphoned off to irrigate vast cotton fields and rice paddies in Central Asia. Over 20 per cent of the young women, aged 13-19, have kidney disease, and another 23 per cent suffer from thyroid dysfunctions. And many women have high levels of lead, zinc and strontium in their blood. Although the Aral Sea probably has less than 10 years of life left, if nothing is done to salvage what remains of it, the 1.1 million residents of Karakalpakia are under immediate health threats. If nothing is done to improve the health of the people we may be witnessing the end of another entire society as a result of human folly. This stamp was issued in 1998.

Bouvier des
Flandres stamp from Netherland Antilles

The Netherland Antilles is a group of islands in the Caribbean. Once the center of the Caribbean slave trade, the island of Curacao was hard hit by the abolition of slavery in 1863. Its prosperity (and that of neighboring Aruba) was restored in the early 20th century with the construction of oil refineries to service the newly discovered Venezuelan oil fields. The island of Saint Maarten is shared with France; its northern portion is named Saint Martin and is part of Guadeloupe. This stamp was issued by the Netherlands-Antilles in 1995.

Bouvier des
Flandres stamp from Tatarstan

Tatarstan is one of the former Russian states along the Volga River. It has been independent since 1994, but even a thousand years ago, it was known as Islam's Northern Mecca. The set of stamps that this Bouvier is from was issued in 2001. When I was updating this page, I tried to order more and found that they have been pulled from sale because they are apparently published by "rebel" forces. We will honor the ban, if this is so. I have not found out the whole story, but the three copies that I have will probably be the only ones available.

Bouvier des Flandres stamp from Guinea

Bouvier des Flandres stamp from Guinea Guinea is partial heir to the series of west African empires that, at their height before the arrival of the Europeans, cast significant political and commercial influence over many peoples from Guinea's Atlantic coast to the southern edge of the Sahara. The empires of Ghana, Mali, and Songhai spanned the period from about the 10th to the 15th centuries. French military penetration into the area began in the mid-19th century. Guinea became an independent republic in 1958.

Bouvier des Flandres stamp from Turkmenistan

Bouvier des Flandres stamp from Turkmenistan Annexed by Russia between 1865 and 1885, Turkmenistan became a Soviet republic in 1925. It achieved its independence upon the dissolution of the USSR in 1991. President NIYAZOV retains absolute control over the country and opposition is not tolerated. Extensive Hudrocarbon/natural gas reserves could prove a boon to this underdeveloped country if extraction and delivery projects were to be expanded. Turkmenistan is on the east side of the Caspian Sea, just above Iran. It is slightly larger than California in size. Its terrain is flat-to-rolling sandy desert with dunes rising to mountains in the south; low mountains along border with Iran; borders Caspian Sea in west. The religion is Muslim 89%, Eastern Orthodox 9%, unknown 2%. The capital is Ashgabsat.
This is probably one of the most amazing mini sheets ever produced. There are eighteen breeds represented and they have managed to run a perforation line through every one. My, what an accomplishment. The Bouvier is shown enlarged to the left.

Bouvier des Flandres Playing Cards

Sorry, we don't have any complete sets of playing cards. These were from collections of antique cards and there is no way of knowing how old they are or where one might find more of them. They are certainly a part of Bouvier des Flandres history.

Bouvier des Flandres playing card

This neat card was put out as the ten of diamonds in a set of dog cards. Each different card had a different breed on it. I don't know of any significance to the ten of diamonds, although I think that it is appropriate that a diamond should be used for a dog that is such a gem in the rough.

This is not a stamp, but a match box cover from Europe. They are printed to be glued on the tops of match boxes where people can collect the whole set. * We can take visa/mc/disc or paypal, but they are first come first served, so let me know if you are interested.

* Truly one of the cheapest unique treats for yourself or a friend (great for club trophies as well!)

* It is absolutely true that you will often find some of these stamps at very reasonable prices -- some can be had for under a dollar. On the other hand, if you add in the gas, hours, and hassles that it has taken to find them, you may find it easier to just get them from us while we have them :*) I don't always count on getting more in the near future. I get them when I can find them and the stock is not always constant.

* I do have other breeds available. Let me know and perhaps I can do a page for your breed.
