not of enough value to mail a letter any more, so to remedy the situation, the local Post
Offices have taken blocks of four "old" printed stamps and overprinted them with
a new image and a new value. The Borzoi shown above on the left
is one of these "Russian Overprints" from Chuvashia. These stamps come in a
set of five different colored stamps all with the same overprint. Last time that I got in
some overprints, I assumed that they would remain available. I was wrong and I never
saw more copies of those (see our "Wish List" page.) I expect these to be equally as rare and collectable. There
is no telling how many of the overprints they produced (not many), since they were never
designed to be sold on the world market. They are of value only for a short while until
the actual stamps can be printed. On the right is the stamp that was ultimately issued
with the Borzoi image from the overprint, put out by Buriatia. There is another
"overprint" pair below to check out as well.

I love this stamp and have found that
this is an artist's painting of a famous
headstudy of Int. Ch. Hajak is Slonowaja
from the 1970's. The cancel mark does not
cover any of the dog. To the right is a copy of a
first day of issue envelope showing more of the set
that the headstudy came with. I have the others from the set as well if anybody
wants them all. There is a Whippet, a Greyhound and a Hungarian Agar (the
one with the hare), as well as a Scottish Deerhound.

This souvenir sheet
is from Afghanistan. The dog continues to be listed in most
resources as an Afghan Hound although it is obviously a Borzoi. The stamp to the
left was from the set issued with the souvenir sheet. I believe
that there were others with different colored
backgrounds for the different denominations.
There were also other stamps in the series:
a camel, a falcon and one of some agricultural
product (?) Both the stamp and souvenir sheet were issued in 1961.

Bhutan put out this interesting
souvenir sheet in 1973. The stamps down
the right were also issued as individual stamps. But the drawings down the left
side were never separately offered, even though they are nicer than the stamps
themselves. I have seen them both perforated and unperforated

This is not really a stamp, but a self stamped envelope put out by Russia before about
1990. It is on rather thin paper to keep the letter light and cheap to mail. I was
able to acquire 10 of these.

independence in 1960, nearly constant unrest has kept it from establishing a
lasting presence in the area.
