Basenji stamp from Abkhazia Basenji stamp from Karelia

Now this is a WONDERFUL pair that is unique in a couple of ways. First, the left stamp is from Abkhazia and it is the only tri-colored Basenji that has been printed except for the souvenir sheet from the Sahara below. Secondly, the stamp on the right is called a Russian Overprint. When the Russian economy got out of hand, the inflation rose so quickly that the stamps that had been printed were no longer of enough value to mail a letter. In a novel move, the government took blocks of four of these stamps and overprinted them with a new image and new value to sell until new stamps could be produced. These were issued for a very short time and were not made for the world market. For this reason, they will soon be collector's items and very rare in dog collections. This lovely Basenji overprint comes as a set of five stamps of five different colors with the same overprint on each. To the right is a sample of a set of Overprints.

Basenji stamp from Ajman Basenji stamp from Ajman

Ajman is the smallest of the United Arab Emirates. It is immediately to the north of and mostly surrounded by Sharjah. Like most of the country, Ajman is in the process of changes which amount to a transformation. The central area is rapidly being modernized and it is clear that Ajman has no intention of being left behind the other Emirates. It is here that the Victory speedboats are built and Ajman is determined to enjoy a share of the United Arab Emirates' victories for itself.

Basenji stamp from Bhutan

Bhutan is a tiny, landlocked country, squeezed between China and India, the two most populous countries. It takes its native name -- Druk Yul -- from the fierce storms that sweep down out of the Himalayan Mountains. Druk Yul means "land of the thunder dragon." Bhutan is the last surviving Buddhist kingdom in the Himalayas and its deeply devout Buddhist culture bears a strong resemblance to that found in Tibet. Wary of foreign influence, Bhutan has full diplomatic ties with only 16 countries and sightseers were barred from the country until 1974. Even now, Bhutan limits the number of tourists to just 4,000 a year.
This lovely Basenji was issued in 1999.

Basenji stamps from Chuvashia

Chuvashia borders both of Russia’s European and Asian regions along one of the major tributaries of the Volga River. Chuvashia’s hops production and the locals’ love of beer has earned the republic the nickname of "Russia’s Bavaria." Chuvash people are Turkish; strangely they are not Muslim but Christian orthodox. This is from the former soviet union state, issued this stamp in 1999.

Basenji stamps from Grenada

Grenada issued a set of 9 dog stamps in 1993 that included this interesting Basenji. Each stamp also commemorates a famous location from the country or area of origin of the breed. In this case, it is the Yamma Mosque in Niger. The setting and background are lovely on this stamp.
Grenada is described as a spice island, for it produces large quantities of cloves and mace and about a third of the world’s nutmeg. It also grows cacao, sugar, bananas and a wide variety of other fruit and vegetables. Some of its beaches, specially Grand Anse, a dazzling two-mile stretch of white sand, are very fine, but the rest of the island is just as beautiful, rising from a generally rugged coast to a spectacular mountainous interior. The island is green, well forested and cultivated and is blessed with plenty of rain in the wet season. Grenada is the most southerly of the Windward Islands. In contrast to other Windward Islands which have had a similar history of disputed ownership between the French and English, the French cultural influence in Grenada has completely died out. The population is very young; 38% are under 15 years old and nearly 26% are in the 15-29 years’ age bracket. has two dependencies in the Grenadines chain, Carriacou and Petit (often spelt Petite) Martinique.

Basenji stamps from Kara Kalpakia

Doing what Basinjis like to do best -- running full out. This nifty new stamp from Kara Kalpakia really fills out an already impressive collection.
Karakalpakia, now under the domain of Uzbekistan, is on the edge of the shrinking Aral Sea, which has recently revealed a shocking scale of environmentally-induced disease. Women and children are most severely affected from the spread of pesticides and other pollutants as the lake - once the fourth largest in the world - has turned into a desert, its waters siphoned off to irrigate vast cotton fields and rice paddies in Central Asia. Over 20 per cent of the young women, aged 13-19, have kidney disease, another 23 per cent suffer from thyroid dysfunctions. And many women have high levels of lead, zinc and strontium in their blood. Although the Aral Sea probably has less than 10 years of life left, if nothing is done to salvage what remains of it, the 1.1 million residents of Karakalpakia are under immediate health threats. If nothing is done to improve the health of the people we may be witnessing the end of another entire society as a result of human folly. This stamp was issued in 2000.

Basenji stamps from Koriakia

The break up of the former Soviet Union has been a gold mine for collectors of topical stamps. In an effort to generate revenue, the new independent states and some of the local areas have started issuing stamps for the world market. This is a lovely example of one of these new issues, from Koriakia in 1999. I expect that most of these will stay available for quite some time at a reasonable price.

Basenji stamp from Mordovia

Mordovia is another of the Russian States that is enjoying the fruits of issuing lovely topical stamps. Mordovia is located between Moscow and the Volga River and is bordered by the republic of Chuvashia on the east. Mordovia is one of the 21 Russian republics, which are the administrative units with the greatest amount of autonomy within the new Russian Federation. Mordovia is a largely agricultural region. Like most of the other republics, Mordovia has started issuing new postal stamps including this great Basenji.
This is an offering from the year 1999.

Basenji stamp from Pabay

Pabay is an island off the Scottish coast of Great Britain that issues topical stamps. Since the island is uninhabited, the stamps are of interest purely for collecting. In 1969, they did a series that included this Basenji headstudy. It is interesting particularly for its historical value, since it is over 36 years old. The only copies that I have right now have an overprint of the 5th anniversary of the death of Winston Churchill in 1970.

Basenji stamp from Turks and Caicos

This lovely pair of Basenjis was issued with a set that showed six different breeds with two dogs on each stamp. It was issued in 2000.
Annexed by Russia between 1865 and 1885, Turkmenistan became a Soviet republic in 1925. It achieved its independence upon the dissolution of the USSR in 1991. President NIYAZOV retains absolute control over the country and opposition is not tolerated. Extensive Hudrocarbon/natural gas reserves could prove a boon to this underdeveloped country if extraction and delivery projects were to be expanded. Turkmenistan is on the east side of the Caspian Sea, just above Iran. It is slightly larger than California in size. Its terrain is flat-to-rolling sandy desert with dunes rising to mountains in the south; low mountains along border with Iran; borders Caspian Sea in west. The religion is Muslim 89%, Eastern Orthodox 9%, unknown 2%. The capital is Ashgabsat.

Basenji stamp from Turks and Caicos

The Turks & Caicos Islands are part of the British West Indies. They are British Crown Colonies, a dependency of Great Britain and are located at the SE end of the Bahama Islands. Of about 50 Islands, only six are inhabited. The estimated population, in 1999, was just under 17,000.
They recently they issued a set of 12 dog stamps showing the uses of the dogs. I could understand the racing for the Greyhounds and the military for German Shephards, but they chose the Basset for a watch dog and a Basenji for a hearing ear dog. Hmm, I'll have to think about that.

Basenji stamp from Udmurtia Basenji stamp from Udmurtia

Udmurtia was kind enough to issue two different and attractive Basenji stamps in 1999. Udmurtia is approximately midway between Moscow to the Urals. Its land is a hilly wooden plain with numerous swamps, springs and rivers. Its climate is considered a bit too wet and not healthy. Summer is short, rainy and cool, autumn is very cloudy (often there are almost no sunny days from October till January), foggy and rainy. This not very friendly land was originally inhabited by Udmurts (or Votyaks). These peaceful and quiet Finnish people maintained their culture heritage there at least for five thousand years. Their religion is also ancient. They worship the God (called Inmar, The Highest Being) and His assistants governing various elements. With the desolution of the Soviet Union, Udmurtia became one of the local republics and as such they now issue stamps including this lovely Basenji. The one on the left is a drawing and the one on the right is an actual photograph, but I have no information on who the dogs are. Notice that it is the same picture as in the Turkmenistan stamp above.

Basenji Souvenir Sheets and MiniSheets

Basenji stamps from Central Africa

This lovely souvenir sheet was issued by Central Africa. Basenji stamp from Central Africa The stamp is designed to honor animals native to Africa, including the Maki Catta, the Mau Egyptian cat and the three breeds of dogs, the Basenji (a great brindle), the Rhodesian Ridgeback and the Coton de Tulear from Madagascar. In each case, the animal is shown with its young. This sheet is collected not just by dog and cat fanciers, but by Boy Scout collectors too. The man is a Scout leader and the children on each stamp wear the uniform of a different level of Scout.

Basenji stamps from Guinee

Basenji stamp from Guinee Guinea is partial heir to the series of west African empires that, at their height before the arrival of the Europeans, cast significant political and commercial influence over many peoples from Guinea's Atlantic coast to the southern edge of the Sahara. The empires of Ghana, Mali, and Songhai spanned the period from about the 10th to the 15th centuries. French military penetration into the area began in the mid-19th century. Guinea became an independent republic in 1958.

Basenji stamp from Malagasy

In 1991, the Basenji was honored by the Basenji stamp from Malagasa Democratic Republic of Malagasy, which is the name for Madagascar, the island to the east of Africa. For a long time, this was the only Basenji stamp that I had been able to find. It was on our "Other Sighthounds" page, as the only representative of the breed. I have done some real searching since then and am proud to have discovered enough to fill out this impressive page of their own. This stamp can be purchased by itself but I have found it only in a non-perforated form and it is too expensive for me to normally carry it. For some reason, the lovely souvenir sheet is actually less expensive! This is a copy of the Souvenir Sheet that was issued along with the stamp to the right. This one can also be mounted with gold leaf nugget style for a piece of beautiful artwork.

Basenji stamps from Mali

I am fascinated by Basenji stamp from Mali this incredible Souvenir Sheet from Mali. It was issued in 1996 and the interesting part is the outstanding brindle Basenji on the right. The Sighthound on the left is an Azawakh, another unusual sight in stamps. It is actually larger than shown here since it has a wide white border as well as the mauve.

Basenji stamps from
Mozambique

Basenji stamp from Mali I used to think that there were not many Basenji stamps, but then the Russian states recognized their unique appeal and issued several stamps in 1999 and 2000 and now, Mozambique has really outdone everybody. This incredible souvenir sheet was issued in 2000. Mozambique is 106 years old. The country came into existence in its present form as a result of an Anglo-Portuguese treaty of May 1891 and gained its independence from Portugal in 1975. The Mozambique created in 1891 was not a piece of random map-drawing but an attempt to make sense of the history of the region in a single colonial state. In doing so, it accepted a part of the African coast which was established in the sixteenth century when the Portuguese divided their command in eastern Africa between the states of Mozambique and Mombassa. This wonderful souvenir sheet is 8 1/2 inches tall by 6 inches wide. In addition to the dogs on the actual stamps, it shows Bull Terriers, a Border Collie, Bloodhounds and a Portugese Water dog in the stream.

Basenji stamps from Saaremaa

Saaremaa is an island off the coast of Estonia between that part of Europe and Finland. It is my impression that this is their first experiment in issuing stamps. The interesting part about this series is that the four stamps are of one breed, in this case, the great Basenji, but if you look closely, you will see the image of a Bloodhound headstudy as the background.

Basenji stamps from Sahara

Basenji stamp from Sahara I love this incredible Souvenir Sheet from Sahara that was issued on September 26, 1998. They chose as their souvenir sheet, this outstanding portrait of Basenjis and the breed couldn't be more honored. The map at the top of the souvenir sheet highlights the area that the dog is from, in this case, the Congo. Sahara also issued a set of African dogs (not shown here) that includes not only the obvious Rhodesian Ridgeback, but also the Sloughi, the Azawahk and the Coton de Tulear from Madigascar.

Basenji stamps from Tanzania

Basenji stamps from Tanzania I am not very fond of most of the stamps issued in this set by Tanzania, but the Basenji is probably the best of the bunch, (shown on the left) and no collection should be without one. Update: I guess that they agreed with me, since they have now issued the Souvenir Sheet for the set and guess what? It is of the Basenji. I like the treatment that they did with it. So, now you get your choice of the stamp alone or the Souvenir Sheet instead.

Basenji stamps from Zambia

Basenji stamp from Zambia What is there to say about this mini sheet from Zambia. Zambia become an independent nation in 1964, but this is the first time that they have issued a set of dog stamps. I am not sure the significance of the breeds that they chose, although the Basenji and Saluki are both African breeds, but the central position for the lovely Basenji is most appropriate.
