Akita stamp from Buriatia

Afghanistan is a mountainous land-locked country located in Central Asia. It has a history and culture that goes back over 5000 years. Throughout its long, splendid, and sometimes chaotic history, this area of the world has been known by various names. In ancient times, its inhabitants called the land Aryana. In the medieval era, it was called Khorasan, and in modern times, its people have decided to call it Afghanistan. The exact population of Afghanistan is unknown, however, it is estimated to be somewhere around 21-26 million. It is slightly smaller than Texas. They have cold winters and hot summers. Some current issues are limited fresh water resources, inadequate supplies of potable water, overgrazing and deforestation. The capital is Kabul. The majority of the population continues to suffer from insufficient food, clothing, housing, and medical care, problems exacerbated by military operations and political uncertainties.

Ajman is the smallest of the United Arab Emirates. It is immediately to the north of and mostly surrounded by Sharjah. Like most of the country, Ajman is in the process of changes which amount to a transformation. The central area is rapidly being modernized and it is clear that Ajman has no intention of being left behind the other Emirates. It is here that the Victory speedboats are built and Ajman is determined to enjoy a share of the United Arab Emirates' victories for itself.

Akita stamp from Barbados

Barbados, in the Caribbean, issued this set of dog stamps in conjunction with Hong Kong in 1997. After independence was granted in 1966, Barbados has issued many stamps, but this set was the only one with dogs on it.
Barbados is the eastern-most Caribbean island. The island, which is less than one million years old, was created by the collision of the Atlantic crustal and Caribbean plates, along with a volcanic eruption. Later coral formed, accumulating to approximately 300 feet. It is geologically unique, being actually two land masses that merged together over the years. The history of the early settlement of Barbados is being rewritten as a result of recent archaeological discoveries unearthed at the site of Port St. Charles. Artifacts and evidence point to settlement some time around 1623 B.C. The first indigenous people were Amerindians who arrived here from Venezuela. The first English ship touched the island on May 14th 1625 under the command of Captain John Powell. The island was therefore claimed on behalf of King James I. It remained a British colony until internal autonomy was granted in 1961. The Island gained full independence in 1966.

Akita stamp from Buriatia
This stamp, recently issued by the Russian state of Buriatia, is listed as an Akita. I keep thinking that it looks more like a Norwegian Elkhound, but we will take their word for it that they want it to be an Akita. Maybe we can take a vote?

The lovely Akita stamp on the right was issued by Cambodia in 1997. It is listed as an Akita Inu. The lighter blue that you see in the scan on the two edges is actually part of the stamp, not a covering over it.

Akita stamp from Gabon

The Republic of Gabon issued this Akita Inu in their dog set in 1996. Little is known about the history of the Gabon region prior to the arrival of the first Portuguese navigators in the Gabon Estuary in 1472, for the Bantu-speaking peoples inhabiting the region lacked writing. The slave trade achieved extensive development only between the 1760s and 1840s, as a result of heightened demand from Brazil and Cuba. Interior peoples sent undesirables from their own societies and captives from warfare down the waterways to the coast where they were collected in barracoons (temporary enclosures) to await the arrival of European ships. In 1910 Gabon became one of the four colonies within the federation of French Equatorial Africa. Gabon was granted internal autonomy in 1958 and became fully independent on 17 August 1960. Much political unrest and ultimately the outbreak of Ebola virus has set Gabon back both economically and politically.

Akita stamp from Gambia

The Gambia is a long and narrow country in West Africa that parallels and takes in both sides of the Gambia River. It is surrounded by Senegal on all sides, except on the Atlantic coast, and for this reason the two countries have a lot of ethnic and cultural ties. In contrast to Senegal, a former French colony, The Gambia was colonized by Britain and gained it's Independence on February 18, 1965.
Gambia issued this set in 1997 of a variety of dogs showing the two headstudies, from the side and straight on. Even if it is not the most attractive, it is an important stamp for a complete collection.

Akita stamp from Greenada

Grenada is described as a spice island, for it produces large quantities of cloves and mace and about a third of the world’s nutmeg. It also grows cacao, sugar, bananas and a wide variety of other fruit and vegetables. Some of its beaches, specially Grand Anse, a dazzling two-mile stretch of white sand, are very fine, but the rest of the island is just as beautiful, rising from a generally rugged coast to a spectacular mountainous interior. The island is green, well forested and cultivated and is blessed with plenty of rain in the wet season. Grenada is the most southerly of the Windward Islands. In contrast to other Windward Islands which have had a similar history of disputed ownership between the French and English, the French cultural influence in Grenada has completely died out. The population is very young; 38% are under 15 years old and nearly 26% are in the 15-29 years’ age bracket. has two dependencies in the Grenadines chain, Carriacou and Petit (often spelt Petite) Martinique.
The island of Grenada in the Caribbean recently put out a series of dog stamps where each breed is paired with a famous structure from its country of origin. The Akita is shown here with the Kyoto Torii of Japan.

Akita stamp from Guinea

This Akita stamp is from one of my favorite sets. At first glance it is the portrait of a darling puppy, but upon closer inspection, in the background is the image of the noble breed that this puppy will become. This set was issued by the Republic of Guinea in 1996 and the dog is listed as an Akita Inu. Guinea is partial heir to the series of west African empires that, at their height before the arrival of the Europeans, cast significant political and commercial influence over many peoples from Guinea's Atlantic coast to the southern edge of the Sahara. The empires of Ghana, Mali, and Songhai spanned the period from about the 10th to the 15th centuries. French military penetration into the area began in the mid-19th century. Guinea became an independent republic in 1958.
This stamp is reasonably common, but from a rather expensive set.

Akita stamp from Japan

This stamp was originally issued in 1953 and is listed as an Akita Dog named Hachi-Ko. It was reissued in 1989 with essentially the same design, but with the addition of "Nippon" on it. I have a couple of the older ones, but usually you will only find the new issue.

Akita stamp from Japan Akita stamp from Japan

This is an interesting set of stamps from Japan. They are supposed to show a fairy tale from their history and the dog is supposed to be an Akita. Although I don't think that it looks much like an Akita, I have heard the story often enough that I am listing it here as part of the Akita set.

Akita stamp from Kalmykia

The Kalmyks settled the Volga River region in the seventeenth century. A Mongol people, they were annexed to Russia in 1771, but a Kalmyk Autonomous Province was created by the Bolsheviks in 1920. This was abolished during the Second World War, when, in common with many other ethnic minorities, the Kalmyks were deemed to have displayed insufficient enthusiasm for fighting for Communism. The customary mass deportations followed. An Autonomous Republic was re-established in 1958. Kalmykia is now a republic within the Russian Federation. This stamp was issued in 1999.

Akita stamp from Sakhalin Islands Akita stamp from Karelia

These stamps are some of the newer Akita stamps. The one on the left was issued in 1998 by the Sakhalin Islands, that lie off of the far east coast of Russia near Alaska. I got in three copies of this set and then was not able to find a new source for them. At this point, I don't have any. Karelia (karjala) is another local Russian state issuing stamps. Fortunately, they chose to duplicate the image that had been used on the Sakhalin Islands set. This one is from 1999.

Together with Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan forms a region known as Central Asia. The area of Kyrgyzstan is almost completely mountainous and is subject to major earthquakes. It declared its independence with the downfall of the Soviet Empire in 1991. The set of stamps that the one on the left comes from was issued in 1997. Unfortunately, I no longer have a source for them. The stamp on the right is new in 2000 and readily available. Akita stamp from Sharjah

Sharjah is the third largest of the seven states, which forms the United Arab Emirates that became fully independent in 1971. From that time, it has attracted attention -- first because of its oil reserves and its strategic location but now in addition to those, because of its program of economic and social development. In the last quarter of the twentieth century, the UAE has witnessed the creation of a truly modern welfare state. Education, health care and social services are available to all citizens. This darling puppy stamp was issued in 2000, the first time that Sharjah has issued dogs stamps since 1972.

Akita stamp from Tanzania

This lovely headstudy is from Tanzania. Tanzania, the largest country in East Africa, is renowned for its magnificent wildlife, lakes, mountains, and scenery. The country boasts a wealth of natural attractions, including the famed Ngorongoro crater and the formidable Mount Kilimanjaro. It is also home to magnificent game reserves: Gombe Stream National Park, with its chimpanzee sanctuary; and the breathtaking plains of the Serengeti National Park, which hosts the annual migration of at least two million wildebeest with leopards and lions hot on their heels. Add to this the lovely beaches of the exotic islands of Zanzibar, Pemba, and Mafia.
Tanzania put out a large 3-sheet collection of dog stamps in 1994, which was the Year of the Dog and produced many of our more unusual dog stamps.

Touva (often spelled Tuva) is a country in the southern area of Siberia. It's a unique place with the landscapes ranging from the desert to the perma frost, and local fauna-from camels to reindeers. Touva is known as almost the only place in the world where shamanism, a very ancient religion, is preserved, kept and cultivated in its original form. These three Akita stamps were all issued in 1999. I am not sure where they got the models for the photographs.

Sacha-Yakutia is another new Russian state. The breakup of the Soviet Republic has been a gold mine for those of us who collect topical stamps. The official language of Liberia is English but several local languages are more widely spoken. In 1980 a military coup overthrew the government and led to economic mismanagement and debt. A democratically elected government was elected in 1997; however, the war had severely damaged the economy through the loss of facilities and foreign investment.

Akita stamp from Turkmenistan Akita stamp from Turkmenistan Annexed by Russia between 1865 and 1885, Turkmenistan became a Soviet republic in 1925. It achieved its independence upon the dissolution of the USSR in 1991. President NIYAZOV retains absolute control over the country and opposition is not tolerated. Extensive Hudrocarbon/natural gas reserves could prove a boon to this underdeveloped country if extraction and delivery projects were to be expanded. Turkmenistan is on the east side of the Caspian Sea, just above Iran. It is slightly larger than California in size. Its terrain is flat-to-rolling sandy desert with dunes rising to mountains in the south; low mountains along border with Iran; borders Caspian Sea in west. The religion is Muslim 89%, Eastern Orthodox 9%, unknown 2%. The capital is Ashgabsat.

* We can take visa/mc/disc or paypal, but they are first come first served, so let me know if you are interested.

Truly one of the cheapest unique treats for yourself or a friend (great for club trophies as well!)

* It is absolutely true that you will often find some of these stamps at very reasonable prices -- some can be had for under a dollar. On the other hand, if you add in the gas, hours, and hassles that it has taken to find them, you may find it easier to just get them from us while we have them :*) I don't always count on getting more in the near future. I get them when I can find them and the stock is not always constant.

* I do have other breeds available. Let me know and perhaps I can do a page for your breed.
